How is he going to explain electing a super racist and a black guy?

My money's on Smith to win the whole thing even if Wallace is nominated (I know I'd have to actually consider voting for her), but if Wallace wins it all Cath can just explain it as "The Vietnam War sucks, maaaaaaan!!!1!eleven!!" and everyone just forgetting that George Wallace hated black people.

If this ends up being Chase/Johnson, unpledged '64!

Let's work to make that unpledged ticket MLK/Wallace!

"Martin Luther King described Wallace as ‘‘perhaps the most dangerous racist in America today’’ (King, ‘‘Interview’’). In a 1965 interview King said: ‘‘I am not sure that he believes all the poison that he preaches,’’ King said in 1965, ‘‘but he is artful enough to convince others that he does’’

There is no way he would accept that nomination...

That's what makes it fun!

What would happen if a VP assassinated a President? Ah well, it's unpledged electors so who knows what'll happen.

Well, don't the people who vote unpledged decide who the electors go for? Let's all start a massive King/Wallace insurgent campaign. Or Wallace/King, but I'd prefer MLK at the top of the ticket.

Well, of course SJoyce's love for Wallace is also pretty hilarious, but after all, he's a libertarian.

I really don't get states-rights libertarians. Is the freedom of the state to ban black kids from white schools really more important than the freedom of black kids to go to white schools? If it is, why can the federal government not do such things? Or can it? Are there any fundamental principles, besides the quite changeable Constitution, that say that states are better than the federal government?

Would it be bad form to go on a rant about how libertarians hate black people?

Johnson/Kennedy

We need Kennedy shouting from the White House for space, but in all other regards Johnson is superior.

Solution: Elect President Gingrich in 2012.

We should all agree now that we will make this happen.

No! President Herman Cain!

Out of curiosity why are several Democrats flipping to the Republican primary in this election?

Acceptance that Johnson's probably going to win it?

So who are the Democrats going to run in '76 after Smith fights the 'Nam and we unanimously elect (and reelect) George McGovern Emperor?

This

I'm guessing Vietnam plays into this.

No matter what happens, we're going to have Vietnam, whether it's Smith or LBJ.

Pretty much this, so lets elect the guy that will give us the Civil Rights Act, Voting Rights Act, Medicare and Medicaid.

Let's have the left finally rally around one candidate this time.

LBJ would take it way further though, plus having a female President is really cool. Especially during the Cold War era.

A: How do you know LBJ would "take it way further"? Smith's policies are said to be even more hawkish than Eisenhower's.

B: We've already had a female President. And a black one. And a Catholic one.

Ugh. If we go by convention runner-ups, both VP choices will be terrible. Can we have LBJ/JFK please?
