Quote
President Joe Biden will not call for a wealth tax to help pay for his multitrillion-dollar Build Back Better initiative, according to multiple people familiar with the White House’s thinking. In doing so, he will sidestep a proposal that progressive Democrats, led by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), say would raise trillions of dollars in revenue and narrow income inequality.

Why exactly do we need tax increases for infrastructure when the economic expansion caused by new infrastructure should easily pay for the costs?

Reaganomics was tax cuts and massive increases in spending (mainly on military).

I’m not seeing any restructuring of the tax code so far in any big progressive way

So far, it’s basically 2009 all over again. Massive new spending and deficits.

Re-read The Proposal. The tax increases being planned to offset the spending increases dwarf anything Clinton passed - - and let's not forget without a single Republican vote, despite the proven success of such tax increases at helping to balance the budget without sacrificing economic growth as promised by the Reaganomics worshippers-- and certainly larger than anything that is occurred since Reaganomics was enacted 40 years ago.

Though I'd certainly be open to more.

The corporate tax increase is stupid. Economists despise the corporate tax- they view it as inefficient and harmful, and modern studies mostly show the corporate tax is borne by labor and consumers.

Would rather just see individual rates go up as well as closing various loopholes and deductions.

Good. I never did get why so many dems are so obsessed with restoring it.

It is a clear benefit for the wealthy.

Politically, it would be among the dumbest moves ever for the GOP to go along with this bill

Biden can

A) brag about getting infrastructure passed
B) brag about doing it in a bipartisan manner
C) pass all the other stuff through reconciliation

The dems made a brilliant play by not going along with Tim Scott’s criminal justice reform bill, knowing it would give Trump a win before the election

What in the world are republicans thinking?

Because doing the right thing for the country is more important than getting credit for yourself at the expense of Americans?

Wish the democrats had this mindset when they filibustered Tim Scott’s police reform bill

The democratic party is currently struggling to get enough votes to pass some pretty basic and vanilla stuff.

If this doesn't make you extremely skeptical that dems can pass something like medicare 4 all, I don't know what to tell you.

So, if Manchin gets his way and the bill is reduced from 3t to 1.5t, what gets removed?

I expect the increase in tobacco and vaping taxes to be removed from the final bill.

Not only a breaking of the "no new taxes on those making under 400k a year" pledge, but just terrible politics. Young people vape.

Joe Manchin is a brave man, a good man.

Country over party, people.

remember that.

country over party

manchin cares about fiscal health. He is looking at the inflation charts.

It almost makes me tear up thinking of his profile in courage right now.

Sinema is asking for a primary

The Arizona Democratic base isn’t exactly moderate either

I’m still confused why this forum is so convinced the 3.5T bill is so important for Dem midterm prospects

It just isn’t true that 2010 was lost due to low turnout among dejected dems

2010 turnout was down everywhere.

This is what happens when a significant part of your party base now is well-to-do ex republicans

Pundits were warning about this from the day Biden was sworn in

The dem coalition is a bizarre coalition of rich suburban voters and hardcore urban progressives.

Those 2 groups have opposed each other for most of American history on policy

It honestly is disgusting how many WH reporters there are

Nobody can honestly argue seeing 45 reporters with their iPhones out recording senators is an example of economic efficiency.

We have literally hundreds of people doing a job a few people could do

It’s the definition of inefficient

There is not a single credible argument against manchin's position that the goodies in the reconciliation bill should be means-tested.

it is a total waste of tax money to give the kids of rich families free community college, to give rich yuppies free daycare, and to give rich seniors free vision and dental.

THE GREAT SOCIETY OF THE 1960S WAS MEANS-TESTED.

why can't 2021 be?
