He shouldn't pick a running mate this early. He should wait so that there's some suspense going into the convention and he keeps both potential VPs and others guessing. He wants those guys to go out there and help him and maybe campaign with him, then see who does the best.

Above all, he needs to see some state-by-state polls, get a feel for the battlegrounds. If it turns out that Florida is within reach, a Florida VP would be very tempting. If he's doing well in the South Edwards or Warner might be good. And so on.

I would love to see him take Bush's fire for 3 or 4 months without a so-called 'moderate' by his side.  He'll be so thoroughly defined to the Left that even John Breux wouldn't be able to bring him back.  He'd better grab hold of Bayh like a flotation device if Bayh's silly enough to let him.

He should set up some suspense at the convention and have everyone on his short list speak at the convention, and Kerry tells all but one of them "You're fired."

I think he will make a surprising pick so Edwards and Graham probably won't be the pick.

How about Robert Byrd or Frank Lautenberg? Kerry-Byrd or Kerry-Lautenberg.

My NEW Top 5 VP's:

1. Senator Evan Bayh (D-IN)
2. Senator John Edwards (D-NC)
3. Governor Bill Richardson (D-NM)
4. Governor Mark Warner (D-VA)
5. Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL)

Kerry-Bayh gives Kerry a good chance to win, as that tips Ohio and Iowa to us and makes Indiana a toss.

1. Former Secretary of the Treasury Robert Rubin (?-??)
2. Former Senator Sam Nunn (D-GA)
3. Governor Janet Napolitano (D-AZ)

This guy is nuts.

Yeah, the CNN guy is on crack.  No way Bob Rubin is even in the running.  If Kerry wanted a former GA Senator he'd go with Max Cleeland, not Sam Nunn.  Napolitano is a maybe, but I think Richardson would be more likely.

According to a reporter on CNN Kerry aides have said they will hope to name the VP much earlier than usual so that there name recognition goes up and they can get firmly established in peoples minds to me this would suggested and unfamiliar figure to most Americans who has not been a candidate in this race so far… to me that suggests the prospect of Warner or Bayh being selected seems even more likely now… of the two I have gut feeling it is more likely to be Warner… then again there’s always Breaux….

I don't. He voted to repeal the estate tax, and he like Zell Miller, is only useful to the dems. in the vote for majority leader.

Comparing Breaux and Miller is like Cheese and Milk... Miller votes in lock with the GOP nearly 100% of the time.. Breaux is part of the Dem leadership in the Senate and has vote with the GOP around 40% of the time while back in 2000 Max Cleland was reported as voting with the GOP 30% of the time and yet many Dems see Cleland as a really strong player in any future Kerry Administration... the truth is Breaux would be an interesting and potenially powerful choice... he might also be good as sectary for Commerce or at Homeland security (then again along with Defence Graham could be a strong candidate for the Homeland security post)...

You're right, Breaux is quite a bit different than Z. Miller, but still a flimsily voting democrat.

ABC News and MSNBC consider Washington and I think Illinois to be a swing state and Virginia or Colorado not to be, who determined these?
