This election has always interested me, not least because out of the 300 members elected, 241 were socialists of various shades (one of whom was, interestingly, my neighbor's grandfather). The decision to hold elections in the first place was odd, since any majority would indubitably be a Bengali majority (the largest Western party, the PPP, ran no candidates in Bengal).

But what if the Awami League's win had been recognized, with Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman? Mujib's government, if it operated under normal Westminster custom, would be all-Bengali, which would of course be quite unacceptable to Westerners. Even if the Six Points were accepted, the formation of a central government would be difficult.

Was there any possible electoral outcome that would not have resulted in disaster?
