In a hypothetical scenario, Ted Kennedy refuses to endorse President Carter, and instead runs as an independent Democrat. What would election day look like?

Ronald Reagan/George H. W. Bush (Republican)
Jimmy Carter/Walter Mondale (Democratic)
John Anderson/Patrick Lucy (Liberal Republican)
Edward Kennedy/Hugh Carey (Independent Democrat)

Kennedy just makes the results for Carter even worse. Though he also weakens Reagan's showing in the popular vote, he evenly divides the Democratic Party between those who remain with Carter, and those who can no longer stand him. Anderson's showings are only made worse by Kennedy's popularity in the New England area.

Reagan 44%/505 Electoral
Carter 28%/15 Electoral
Kennedy 20%/18 Electoral
Anderson 4%/0 Electoral
