LDP is definitely getting it's ass kicked. Opposition strength is above 200 seats now, while the LDP coalition sits around 50-ish.

If the Japanese think this will ease their economic slump of the last 20 years, they are sadly mistaken.

Opposition numbers to about 244 now, so the DPJ has assured itself power now, as if there was any doubt.

Crazy but awesome. I remember talking a lot about the possibility of this happening in my Comparative Politics class last semester. Strongly approve.

3 of the 11 "Others" are from the People's New Party (PNP), which DPJ leader Yukio Hatoyama pledged to include in a coalition (along with the SNP) "no matter how far we can extend the number of seats we hold."  Your Party (YP) (post- or at dissolution LDP defectors) wasn't included in Hatoyama's pledge, although their addition to the DPJ-SNP-PNP coalition would give that coalition a supermajority which they would be two seats short of otherwise (although some of the 8 other "Others" mentioned above might be of a common mind with the three seemingly definite coalition partners on issues where those three parties would want to make changes requiring a supermajority, whatever those changes may be).

Prediction: The DPJ will govern in exactly the same way as the LDP.

Also, Komeito lost pretty big.

If the Japanese think this will ease their economic slump of the last 20 years, they are sadly mistaken.

This isn't about economics.

Quite, it's the "time for a change" vote that swung it. Like 1997 in the UK.

Yeah of course:

If you speak some Japanese, try the 2nd flash graphic and you can access every candidate and every district.

So, according to that site, the DPJ (the ones in blue, I guess) has just won 322 seats, while the LDP (the seats in red) has been reduced to 140 in the lower house of the Diet.

Are these the final results?  I noticed some 18 seats are in yellow -I can't tell if these are going to the third parties or if they haven't been decided yet.

DPJ + allies have 322, the DPJ itself has 308.
LDP + allies (NKP) have 140, the LDP itself has 119, the NKP 21.
