Predict who will be governor in each of the 8 largest states (by population) in 2 years (2011).  For reference, the eight largest states are:

CA
TX
NY
FL
IL
PA
OH
MI

All of them are either an open seat in 2010, or there's an incumbent who's not exactly wildly popular.  Predict which *individual* you think will be governor, not just which party.

CA -- Jerry Brown (D)
TX -- Kay Bailey Hutchison (R)
NY -- Some Democrat other than Paterson
FL -- Bill McCollum (R)
IL -- Pat Quinn (D)
PA -- Tom Corbett (R)
OH -- Tough one.  I'll say Strickland (D), but it can change.
MI -- I have NO idea.  It all depends on the economy, and if Republicans will have gained ground over there.

CA-Jerry Brown (D)
TX-Rick Perry (R)
NY-Andrew Cuomo (D)
FL- Bill McCollum (R)
IL-Lisa Madigan (D)
PA-Dan Onorato (D).  Corbett/Meehan are overhyped.  This is a Dem state in the end.  It maybe wise to keep Knox away however.
OH-Ted Strickland (D)
MI-John Cherry(D).  See PA, but the economy if anything will benefit the Dems tremendously.

Yeah, I would agree with those who say that the NY governor will be "some Democrat who isn't Paterson", but is any such person actually going to run?  Or will Paterson win the Democratic nomination by default?

The NY political scene is filled with too many ambitious egos for someone not to run against Paterson.  Think about how many bitter congresscritters were contemplating runs against Gillibrand before the White House stepped in and cleared the dust somewhat.

Trust me, if people thought Paterson would be unopposed in the primary, there would be at least fifteen Democrats who would look into giving it a shot.  Remember that those same congresscritters are bitter at Paterson for not picking them for the Senate.

I see quite a few posts predicting Quinn to be elected Gov in IL in 2010. Do those posts assume that AG Lisa Madigan will be running for Senate? I don't see Madigan losing a primary battle with Quinn if she runs for Gov, but a large number of GOPers are lining up for Gov hoping in part that Madigan will shift to Senate.

Affirm those choices but I think Quinn remains governor.  Quinn has high approvals and I think he will get his tax increase by November as long as they reform Pensions, well before the January primary.  Lisa Madigan I think will be well deserved instead of doing a 'Sink' and run for the Senate instead.

Ok, this is definitely a joke. Two time statewide elected Attorney General Tom Corbett cannot seriously challenge Knox? Jim Gerlach, who has survived some of the hardest Congressional races of any member of Congress and who comes from a major swing area, cannot seriously challenge Knox? Pat Meehan, the very well connected and very well respected former U.S. Attorney and former District Attorney for Delaware county cannot seriously challenge Knox?

Do you even know a thing about Knox and how grossly out of touch he is (not to mention the fact that he's in his 70s, has no charisma and his attempts to buy office have annoyed Republicans and Democrats)?

I only know what my 5 min Wikipedia research told me. I just think Pennsylvania is trending Democrat of late. However, I do think it will be close.

Your rant was amusing for some reason.

I don't claim to be an expert on Pennsylvanian politics.

Uh....where to begin?

The Wiki article "told" you that Knox will get no serious challenge? You're seriously going to cite Wikipedia for analysis of this race? Tell me exactly what Wikipedia said that made you claim Knox won't get serious opposition by the PA GOP.

You expect the race to be close...but you said no PA Republican can seriously challenge Knox. Uh?

You don't claim to be an expert on PA politics...but decide to make a ridiculous claim that some old guy who lost a Philly Mayoral primary by double digits (when he was supposed to win) won't get any serious opposition by the PA GOP?

Also, you cite the Wiki article but totally ignore Tom Corbett and Pat Meehan and the heavyhitters that Knox will potentially face in the primary?

I didn't "rant" about anything; I was stating the obvious in response to a totally, totally inaccurate post that has been been laughed off by more people than just myself.

I'll make it more reasonable.

CA - Whitman (R) Don't underestimate the advantage money has, especially in a big state
TX - Hutchison (R)
NY - Giuliani (R) Ya never know, it is my right to dream
FL - McCollum (R)
IL - Cross (R) Democrats are probably damaged by Burris and Blago.
PA - Tom Knox (D) Robert Mellow(D)
OH - Kasich (R)
MI - Hoekstra (R)

Possibly even more ridiculous.  Tongue

Mellow as the nominee would be a blast for the GOP.

Vepres, if you really want a Dem in there will give the GOP big problems then I would suggest Wagner, or  Onorato.

This is the thread about the race for Governor of the most important state in the Nation Grin. It will fill in some of your missing knowledge, Vepres.
