86 percent white, 12 percent black*; the impoverished (per capita income = $14,000) north Louisiana parish of La Salle gained international infamy with the Jena Six debacle in 2007, and, well... it votes like you'd expect it to. The last Democratic presidential candidate to win there was Adlai Stevenson in 1952. For your viewing pleasure, here are some sample results since then:

1960: Nixon 55%, Unpledged 23%, Kennedy 22%
1964: Goldwater 83%, Johnson 17%
1968: Wallace 66%, Nixon 22%, Humphrey 12%

2000: Bush 75%, Gore 23%
2004: Bush 80%, Kerry 19% [Swing: +9]
2008: *Bush 85%, Obama 13% [Swing: +12]

In his 1990 Senate bid, David Duke won 63 percent against Bennett Johnston; and one year later, won 67 percent in the gubernatorial race against Edwin Edwards. But folks here aren't just partisan hacks; in 2003, Democrat Kathleen Blanco beat Piyush "Bobby" Jindal with 61 percent. Wink

for good measure, the 2008 presidential primaries...

D: Clinton 52%, Obama 22%, Edwards 15%, Richardson 4%, Biden 3%, Dodd 3%
R: Huckabee 66%, McCain 28%, Romney 3%

like or dislike?

Obviously negative (D).

But weren't there some counties where Obama got an even lower share than there were Blacks in the county ?

That reason alone is enough reason for an HP verdict.

I hate to cast a negative vote against a Southern county, but obviously I must.  There is no other possible answer.
