Note that Willard "Mitt" Romney was not included here, but was listed under Massachusetts, where he served as Governor.

I'm probably going to shock everyone and agree.  BRTD may proclaim me the ultimate "moderate hero" for this one! LOL

But Hatch, though I've not always appreciated his work on the Judiciary Committee, has championed two issues that have earned him my respect.  First, he worked tirelessly with Ted Kennedy to try to pass a children's health care bill.  And second, both he and former Oregon Senator Gordon Smith tried to get their party to see the light on the stem cell research issue.  That took guts, particularly for a guy previously very popular in the so-called "pro-life' movement.

Hatch has also demonstrated that one can be fiercely devoted to your party and still maintain personal affections and friendships across the aisle.  He was the first non-family member or non-clergyperson at Ted Kennedy's bedside during the Massachusetts Senator's battle with brain cancer.  Hatch and Kennedy are said to love each other like brothers...and argue like brothers, as well.  I find that encouraging.

I think so.  He has his convictions...he sticks to them...occasionally, he changes his view based on new information...and he doesn't feel the need to demonize or villify his ideological foes.  It's hard not to like someone of that ilk.  Thad Cochran is another.  If I am to "the left of Mao", Cochran is easily "to the right of Mussolini".  But seriously -- he gets along with everyone.  You gotta respect that.
