He's still under investigation for possession of child pornography himself though. He argues that he needed that stuff for research purposes in relation with his work as a media and Internet expert of the German Bundestag.
Yeah, he was basically privately investigating. Which was a stupid thing to do as a Bundestag member.
Pretty clear to anyone who's followed the case that what he's saying about it is the truth, btw (the lack of a sizable collection would be a dead giveaway in and of itself).
This thing would be reasonably certain not to end in a conviction if this were Joe Blow from down the street. It may not make it to trial at all.
