However, the child porn allegations have led to his resignation from several high-ranking party positions and he had become increasingly isolated within the SPD. So his decision to switch parties could have been at least partially motivated by the fact that his political career in the SPD is effectively over anyway.

So, I'm not sure yet if this is a good thing or a bad thing for the Pirate Party.

Yeah, he was basically privately investigating. Which was a stupid thing to do as a Bundestag member.
Pretty clear to anyone who's followed the case that what he's saying about it is the truth, btw (the lack of a sizable collection would be a dead giveaway in and of itself).
This thing would be reasonably certain not to end in a conviction if this were Joe Blow from down the street. It may not make it to trial at all.
