That's a lot closer than I would have expected. I wonder if she'd be a favorite if Daniel Akaka retires/dies (he's up in 2012 and would be 88).

Isn't Inouye nearly 90?

84. 86 by general election time. 92 by the time the term is out.
I suppose he wants to become the first minority PPT.

Not only are Hawaii's Senators both Daniel K, they're just four days apart in age.

That's surprisingly close.  I still don't see Lingle coming within 20 points of him on election night; for that matter, I don't think she runs at all.

Lingle is popular but Inouye is a god there as far as I know. If I remember correctly, other polls of this matchup have had a much wider margin too.

Surprisingly close, I must say. I didn't know that Lingle was that popular in Hawaii. She might be the favorite to win an open seat.

I think Lingle is a awesome pol. She would never come even close though. The 600 year old senators there have a life-time ticket to the senate seats.

I doubt Lingle even considers running unless Inouye retires.

I don't know if Linda Lingle will run or not, but if she doesn't, who else will the Republicans nominate? I mean, they only have TWO Republicans in the Hawaii Senate and six in the Hawaii House of Representatives, and since she's term-limited, I'm sure Lt. Gov. James Aiona will run for Governor in 2010, so who else does that leave? She'd definitely be the Republicans' best candidate but Daniel Inouye is too popular and respected in one of the bluest states in the country. If she doesn't run, the Republicans will just have to find a sacrificial lamb or Inouye may run unopposed.

At least Hawaii would have two wonderful choices if this happened, but I'm pretty sure even the Republicans vote for Inouye because his a military hero and very highly respected in Hawai'i.

Aiona will run for governor.
