Didn't he screw up Mississippi while he was governor?

Far from it; he still is governor and has done an excellent job.  Barbour is a great executive; unfortunately, he is not a great candidate - at least not for national office.  I'm surprised that he's even testing the waters - as a former tobacco lobbyist with some racial problems, he's pretty much admitted he's unelectable.

A former lobbyist vs. Obama.

Unlikely, but an interesting thought, nonetheless.

Unelectable, perhaps, but not unable to win the Republican nomination.

Right.  He is an oustanding governor and I think he would make a fabulous vp to someone like Coburn or Demint.  Then you could have a conservative at the top of the ticket with a conservative to moderate as vp.

Maybe he's trying to get into a position where he can play kingmaker?  He's far from unelectable at the primary level, and maybe he's trying to rack up delegates, and then score a major prize from the person he endorses?

How did I know that it was going to be Naso to begin this thread?

Also, thanks for the gigantic photo, Mike.

He's a good man and a great Governor.  I met him a few years ago but neglected to get a photo Sad

That being said, the tobacco lobbying, the southern drawl, and being from a state with a confederate flag in its canton.... its hard to see how he overcomes his own resume.

Of course, we just elected a President who sat in the pew and Amen'ed while his pastor spouted off anti-American hate speech.... so you never know.

This is all we need. A Governor of a deep southern state who used to be a tobacco lobbyist. Just what we need to win in 2012. I hope he sticks to his previous statement that no former tobacco lobbyist needs to be running for President.

Is he really going to make an impact in a race likely to be filled by candidates just as conservative, but with vastly higher national profiles? I just can't see him breaking through Palin/Huckabee/Gingrich/etc. to reach even a point of marginal relevancy. And Haley Barbour doesn't exactly strike me as the type to lead a moderately successful maverick campaign, the type that often stirs up Republican primaries (McCain in 2000) before ultimately failing.

The only thing that stopped him in 2008 was his wife. Not now, and if he can win some Governor seats in 2010 he'll be able to compete.

He has a higher profile now than Huckabee or Romney did circa 2006.

I can see him going to Iowa.  As far as New Hampshire, well perhaps a photo op and to get his name out there a bit more, but other than that he would have nothing there.

He could be somewhat competitive in a Primary, but running a former tobacco lobbyist from Mississippi is not the way to win a General.

Church? Obama's a secret Muslim, remember?

If you're going to hold on to campaign myths, at least get them straight.
