This is a situation where the government needs to be heavily involved in ensuring that researchers are independent, unbiased, and in this case, protected from threats and intimidation from the companies they serve.

If the drug companies don't like that, then I'd honestly have no problem with the government seizing all of their assets and auctioning them off to drug companies that will play ball and using the proceeds from the auction to pay for government funded drug research.
