I figured this would be an interesting discussion.

Labour in 2009.

Major's leadership was challenged and he won (in '95) While he took the party to an expected defeat, the economy had been growing quarter on quarter since 1993. His own ratings had been climbing steadily since 1995 (though they were still low)

So the Tories' situation in 1995 was worse than Labour's in 2009 (from what we know for certain will happen, not from what's possible). Of course there's the slight difference of 2 years to the polls vs one.

John Major didn't have ministers resigning and asking for him to do so as well.

Yep - if nothing else, Major had better control over his Cabinet.

The Tories simply win by default due to the better economic situation back then, to be fair. I think it remains to be seen, some people thought back then, especially after the 2001 election, the Tories would never get back in power, but now it's yet to be seen how big the loss Labour will suffer and how much of that will be long-term damage.

Labour.

Regardless of whether whom had the better economic climate during their respective governments tenures, at least Major, compared to Gordon was actually competent.

Hmm, Labour's situation is certainly worse.  John Major didn't have an expenses scandal hanging over him for starters.

Don't you remember Back to Basics - Major had to keep distancing himself from his own MPs indiscretions - in much the same way Brown keeps having to distance himself from the Expenses saga.

Major had constant trouble with his cabinet. Granted, he usually had to sack them when they refused to walk after being found corrupt and incompetent, rather than see them resign when he didn't want them to. He was also pretty continuously more popular than his party.

He also lost his parliamentary majority through defections at one point IIRC. That's not happened to Brown, at least not yet. Grin

Guys, this was more about "Who is headed towards a bigger defeat?"

Similar, I'd say. Though, of course, the title probably should read "2010". Grin
