You guys ever run into these folks...

http://www.wels.net/cgi-bin/site.pl

We send our daughter to a Missouri Synod School and -- even though they're a lot more conservative than we are -- they have been really great.  So far, so good.  But then, someone there told me that, as conservative as the MoSyn was, the Wisconsin Synod regarded them as liberal heretics!  Fascinating.

I was wondering if you had any experience with them, since most of their churches are in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and so forth.

My parents attend a Missouri Synod church.  While I haven't been to church in years, I do remember that most Lutherans consider them absurdly conservative, even by LCMS standards...and, you have to remember, LCMS nearly had a schism over whether or not praying with people from other religions is a sin.

Other Christian denominations, actually.  But I was asking about the Wisconsin Synod, who ostensibly make the MoSyns look liberal...

No real experience with them. I've seen their churches but never met any outspoken members. They are rather outnumbered. If you simply say "I'm Lutheran" here, everyone assumes you are ELCA.

I know, that's why I said that even by LCMS standards, the Wisconsin Synod is absurdly conservative.  Looking back, I could have worded it better.

Other Lutherans I know have said that the Wisconsin Synod might as well join the Catholic Church, which, I suppose, is in keeping with Lutheran condescension.

I sometimes wonder why my particular church is LCMS, I guess in and of itself its more conservative than Red's branch, but as LCMS churches go, its a little more liberal (of course, its a suburban midatlantic church).

I can't even fathom the WELS variant.

Around here Lutheran almost always means ELCA.  If I were a Lutheran, I'd have a choice of about 10 ECLA churches in the immediate vicinity, but I'd have to head to Columbia to find the nearest Missouri or Wisconsin Synod church.

So somewhere in South Carolina is quite similar to much of rural southern and northern Minnesota in this aspect? Very interesting...

The area I live in was settled by German Lutherans back in colonial days, so we have quite a few Lutherans with German surnames.
