When GM and Chrysler's bailouts were initially being discussed, some people said that they should just be allowed to go bankrupt. The majority (it seems) thought this was an absurd idea. Now Chrysler is bankrupt and GM is about to declare bankruptcy.

So what good did the bailout do? It just delayed bankruptcy as far as I can tell, and was a collosal waste of money.

They were the most politically acceptable thing to do.  Now that is to let them go bankrupt.  Recent actions have proved beyond a doubt that this administration is less about substantial ideological strategy as it is about politically motivated publicity stunts.

George Bush approved the first bailout.

The argument isn't whether Obama and politicians do whatever is politically easiest, the argument is over the merits of the bailouts. There are tons of people who defended the bailouts as the best idea in terms of economics, not as the politically expedient thing to do.

It's amazing how people still try to spin this.

The warnings were numerous, but people gave into hysteria, the number one cause of deeper recessions. If we stop the hysteria now, we have a chance.

It was just easy to do. We should have (temporarily) nationalized them, though.

Probably.  I didn't understand the need for the two auto companies to be bailed out.  The bankruptcy process is there just for cases like this . . . companies who are in a position where they cannot pay their lenders but still create a viable product/service.  The airline industries were not propped up with billions in bailout funds, and they came back leaner and meaner.  Why are the auto company's any different?
