I've always been intrigued by the often unconditional support given to Israel by people who in domestic US terms are usually against big government, labor unions, pro-legal abortion policies etc.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't Israel be considered a sort of Sweden of the middle east.  They have a thriving labor union movement, high taxes, nationalized health care, and an overall high government state. In addition, the economy is heavily dependent on welfare from the US. (don't know about reperations from Germany, have those run out or are they perpetual?)  Abortion is legal, and the personal income tax rate is very progressive, starting at 10% and going all the way to 46%.  Finally, even the electoral system of almost pure proportional representation is something that very few on the right of the political spectrum in the US would support, and is similar to Scandinavian democracy, although Israel has  a very low representation  threshold, unlike Sweden or Norway.
Anyway, does anyone else find in peculiar that so many conservative Republicans in the US support such a left leaning country?

I wouldn't call Israel "socialist" but its economic policies (to the exclusion of most Palestians etc) are considerably to the left of those of the United States . Therefore yes it is a bit strange that many US conservatives support Israel, but their reasoning (for strategic/geopolitical purposes in the middle, religious reasons etc) depends on the type of conservative.

Are not most "western" Nations "left of the US" (like everybody in NATO)?  Conservatives suppport them too don't they?

(you can make fun of something, disagree with how they do certain things and still support it by the way)

Dead0man, thats correct, but in the case of Israel I detect a fawning, unconditional approval from many conservatives that I don't hear from them when discussing the European countries.  There is often complaint about European socialism, but never Israeli socialism from them.  I guess I'd like to hear a more level headed, less infatuated conservative analysis about Israel from them.

you have to understand that many of Israel's "friends" on the American right support Israel not as a real place with real people, homes, land, and businesses, but as a vehicle for the return of Christ and the fulfillment of the prophecies contained in the Book of Revelations.

No, but that too. Israel is commonly compared to Nazi Germany.

Considering how Israel keeps insisting it needs Lebensraum in the West Bank no matter who is in government, is it any wonder comparisons are made?  That those comparisons are overwrought doesn't negate the kernel of truth in them.

Israel is neither a fascist nor a nazist state. It's a state who was hatefully attacked for decades. As hatred is highly contagious, they finished to become to look more and more like those against them they fought. That's bad, that's unfair, but the fault is not only Israel's.

Up. I'd like to see this answered, along with, more generally, how one can have a small government and a big military.
