However, I think it's fair to say that the vast majority of the Protestants don't identify as Irish.

Certainly not here.  But then again, we prefer to mourn our faith.  It is a burden we must all suffer and endure, much like a horrific blizzard... but we mustn't complain.

The Irish seem a bit more enthusiastic about it and would stick out in our crowd of solemn salvation seekers.

Even our Baptist churches are drab and uneventful.  No fire and brimstone... just guilt... and at times, a little regret... an outburst of "AMEN!" by a congregant is often immediately followed by a good throat clearing and an apologetic look to God.

gay men considered a separate branch of person (which is what I'm aiming at)?
I wouldn't exactly consider gay men "a separate branch of person" today either. Transsexuals, maybe.

Ugh.. Language. I mean an identity based around one's sexuality.

Again. You'd be surprised.

EDIT: There is still a tendency towards Whiggish or Nationalist intrepretations of history here. Mostly because what everyone over the age of 40 or so was taught at school and seaps in here and there sometimes.

You need a doctor to treat minor ailments.

It is dangerous for people to self-prescribe antibiotics.

But in the government regulated drug field here you need a doctor's prescription.  Are you in favor of greater freedoms without government regulation of the matter (aka, less government) like they obviously have in Thailand?

I don't think in terms of 'more government' or 'less government', GM.  The State is everything.  It currently forces us to pay a tribute to the medical mafia in order to get a handful of azithromycin.  I think instead it should give them to us upon request 'for free'.

So you're saying that everybody knows it sounds like Einzige, but that's actually wrong?

Well, it actually is true, just not the over-dramatized version that sells copy.  The funny thing is that Liberals charged the existence of "Death Panels" in insurance companies long ago.

There is still a tendency towards Whiggish or Nationalist intrepretations of history here. Mostly because what everyone over the age of 40 or so was taught at school and seaps in here and there sometimes.

Now this I did know; the Irish historical profession is something of a stock joke over here.

No, it isn't as bad as it once was. But it is still ridiculously parochial (Northern Ireland is worse btw).

Yes, but then that would be rather difficult, wouldn't it Tongue

And prone to the worst sorts of nationalistic idiocy. It's a real shame because Irish history is quite interesting and sod all historians outside Ireland are especially interested in it (other than using it as a tool to bash/laugh at Irish historians).

Urgh, yes. Though when "Irish historians" get mocked, it's common to include ones from the North also.

Economic and Cultural History (apart from in connection to romantic nationalist ideas) didn't exist until the 60s. Marxism* wasn't discovered until the 1970s (where it was partly greatly taken up by the IRA)... So yeah we tend to be behind the times.

At least it was better (of course it was) than at school level, Christian Brothers were legendary for hate-the-Brits school of thought. A mature student who is now in my class recalled these days when he said to me "[In that Class] Even when it rained the English were responsible".

But it's not surprising. At secondary school level there is so much emphasis on teaching the Irish language (Because OMG THAT'S REAL IRISH CULTURE!!11) and Mathematics that the humanities are shoved aside.... *cue autorant*.

* - Peader O'Donnell excepted.

That reminds me while idiocy from Irish/Ulster historians is common place, it is nothing compared to some of the idiocy I've seen from Irish-American historians on this country. Which is a pity, because they often get America right.

Ah yes, Whataboutery.

As a note I have a special interest in this topic. I'm actually going to be doing my final year thesis on it. So there. Tongue

You obviously have missed the point of this thread. Learn it or quit posting:

Now "everybody" is obviously an exaggeration, but it clearly means "most people". Not "fringe right Republicans" or "a single person" (as I have yet to see anyone but Richius claim he is not an extremist.)

So learn the purpose or shut up.

We need a special thread for "what I think everyone thinks that is wrong, but hardly anyone actually think that" thread.

Kalwejt is the only one doing that really. And I suppose GMantis, but this might be excusable since I wouldn't be shocked if most people in the former Eastern Bloc do believe that most Americans believe that. Which actually makes it a good entry for this thread actually.
