No. Most panics like this end up with relatively few deaths and even if not, we will all die sooner or later. Death is part of life. Besides, I've not been "well" for eleven years now. Because of that, health-scares don't really work...

In addition, we've got a Health Minister who is an incompetent MP for Resolute Bay and Ellesmere Island and who obviously has no clue what the hell is going on. We also had an idiot health official who publicly said that it's only a matter of time before this become a 1918-like pandemic, this coming while the government says to keep calm.

Also doesn't help that the Federal Government is stuffed with dittoheads who ran Ontario during the 2003 SARS outbreak. At least there's no Mel Lastman striving to be a fool on world media.

I fail to see how that's a good thing. The world could do with a laugh right now.

They might think their readers are dumb...but they are smart enough not to buy it. In more ways than one Wink

The Ottawa Sun only did "SWINE FLU IN CANADA" yesterday. I was expecting more scaremongering on their part.

(The Ottawa Sun is the Ottawa branch of the IQ=0 newspaper chain in Canada, which includes the Journal de Montréal, Toronto Sun, Journal de Québec, and a bunch of other ____ Sun newspapers. Owned by Quebecor).

The Ottawa Citizen probably ranted "goddamn liberals swine flu".

Everyone take a minute and give a standing ovation to a mister "Doug Gross" from CNN, for writing a sensible article for CNN.com.

Apparently the two people who died in LA didn't die of swine flu:

I was worried about it for a day. I now accept the fact that, in a real pandemic, I would be one the first to die off.

I'm moving out of Texas and into a less congested state as soon as my fever breaks.

Wow, I am impressed by how calm everyone is. I grew up with my mom working on Washington State's emergency health system made for cases like these and to tell the truth I personally AM scare beyond all belief. By the way while most cases so far in the US have been relatively mild the real fear comes from the ease with which a strain such as Swine Flu can mutate into something much more dangerous. The fact that it is spreading so rapidly means that everyone needs to be prepared...

Then again who knows what could happen? I am just hoping that the UK doesn't restrict travel from the US (I have plans to visit London in May).

Actually, there is no adaptative advantage in increasing virulence--if the host can go up and about the virus has much better chances of propagating, which is why the trend if for mortality and morbidity to decrease, not to increase.

I just found the most amusing typo (well I think it is anyway) in that article:

I'm not sure how you "complain" of lymphoma, but in any case if he did have lymphoma he had greater problems than the flu--wouldn't it have made better sense to look there first for a cause of death?

Looks like a container with swine flu exploded n a train in Switzerland:
http://www.spiegel.de/international/zeitgeist/0,1518,621598,00.html

But it wasn't the mutated strain, apparently. Still sounds like a bad movie though. Tongue

I'm waiting for Stephen Harper to rant on about how the virus is caused by the Liberals and NDP, supported by the separatist and treasonous Bloc, and that Canada would have to be prorogued until July.

France doesn't panic.

Still, Roselyne Bachelot is Health Minister. And Ségolène Royal is still free. And François Bayrou keeps on opening his mouth.

OMG ! Oh no ! We're all going to die !

I thought that was a fake link at first, and after reading it realised it was just mild religious persecution.

No one like the name of that flu:

It's not only in US, in France and Europe pork producers claim for the same thing.

It seems that this flu comes from the very bad conditions there are in pig farms near Mexico city. Let's hope that this will be used as a lesson to improve the breeding conditions of all kind of animals in general. We're in a trendy "green" context, let's hope.

Well, the Mexican government got naming rights, and its not like they were going to call it "Mexican flu" and absolutely decimate their tourism for the next decade/forever if its big. The only other thing that blame could be put upon was the pigs.

How about 'Media Flu'? That's what seems to be spreading it....

Turns out the US death was a Mexican who went there for treatment.
