Pat Buchanan succeeds in snatching away the Republican nomination from the incumbent President. Everything on the Democratic side occurs as in real life.

What happens next?

Well, we can do it both ways: a scenario where he does, and one where he doesn't.

If Perot doesn't run : Buchanan does better than Bush in the West but loses decisely a lot of southern states. He finally loses badly :

Clinton : 54%, 407 E.V.
Buchanan : 44%, 131 E.V.

Why would Buchanan do poorly in the south? His racist, fear-mongering, bible thumping crap would do well down there.

Clinton would win much of the south against Buchanan for the same reasons he won it against Bush.  Clinton was a southern Democrat, the country was in bad economic straits at the time, Buchanan certainly had no leverage on that issue, and according to polling done at the time, issues like abortion and other conservative religious issues were close to the bottom on people's lists of priorities.
