Not shocking, and you forgot some shootings such as the one in Oakland. Felons with assault weapons can end rather badly. Of course, the Democrats in Congress would rather not lose Congress again, so they're not going to do anything on this issue.

The problem is not that most Americans don't support gun control.  Pretty much every single poll shows they favor tighter restrictions, background checks, gun registration and pretty much every other thing the NRA fights against.  However, those who tend to base there vote only on the issue of guns tend to be overwhelmingly gun nuts.

Great.

Just because 70% of the country is made up of paranoid gun nuts and fools easily won over by these nuts, doesn't mean that GUNS ARE GOOD or something.

I'm certainly not a paranoid gun nut. I don't even care about owning a gun (I'm sure I will at some point). I just hate blaming a gun because some people decide to act like animals with them.

Americans support a lot of stupid things. Americans elected that Bush idiot twice. Americans used to think that black people were 2/5 of a human-being. Just because 70% of the country is made up of paranoid gun nuts and fools easily won over by these nuts, doesn't mean that GUNS ARE GOOD or something.
...and still, I don't own a gun.  There are millions of Americans who are as pro-gun as I am that don't own guns.  How can a "paranoid gun nut" not own a gun?

Bingo. Thank you.

If you people have an issue with the wording, blame Gallup, not Lunar. All he did was quote the poll.

Who cares? Gun control is basically a non-issue as far as I'm concerned anyway. Let the mountain dwellers and the toothless bumpkins have their precious guns and then let us pray that they just shut up.

WalterMitty is going to be pretty upset about this though.

Anyone who believes that guns ought to be banned shouldn't be permitted to marry. Anyone who believes that people shouldn't be free to marry those of their own choosing out to have their guns confiscated. Or their children retroactively aborted.

Controlling others is ridiculous any way you slice it.

It's worth noting that far more people still support increasing gun restrictions than support reducing them, so it's not like the NRA is any more mainstream than gun control advocates or anything.

Of course, the plurality opinion is in favor of the status quo, which seems pretty reasonable.

More restrictions =  Less guns in the hands of the good guys.

Why do you care so much about guns? I have to ask.

Well, I hardly think there's anything inhuman about murdering.  It has always been a popular passtime.

No. I'm libertarian on most things, but allowing people to have guns is plain stupid.

Guns are an essential and key part of the Libertarian ideology. It's like being a socialist against universal health care.

There are reasons that the UK is not considered a libertarian country. Gun control is one of them.

My father retired from the Police Department back in December, bought a firearm, and couldn't find any ammo. Insiders at gun shops and outlet stores are all saying people are "terrified" that the new guy in charge wants guns banished and the best way to do so is by getting rid of ammo. My father tried to get ammo everywhere, finally was able to order some from MONTANA.

In my college classes, which are majority women btw, many are very outspoken about supporting concealed weapons permits and their right to bear arms. Hopefully in four years, President Sanford or Romney or whoever will help reverse these negative trends.

They don't have to wait four years to reverse these ''trends''. There are already plenty of qualified psychiatrists in America.

You think Sanford or Romney's going to reverse the trend in your community college class so your classmates no longer support concealed weapon permits?

This is because collectives, especially groups of ignorant rednecks, are stupid and act according to their fears.
