Lots of good points above.. let me just add that if the real median income is maybe $35,000/year, then the one in the imaginary "mainstream's" median income must at least four times that.  At least from what you see on TV.

Even "poor" people on tv like Roseanne and the Bundys have large houses. I guess nobody wants to look at actual poors. I remember how shocked all these people were after Katrina that a huge black underclass exists in America. How can you live in this country and not notice?

Any place that the person using the term likes. Smiley

But most of the country's population is urban or at least suburban, so the idea that rural America=real America is a bit flawed, in my opinion....and I say this as a proud resident of rural America (albeit a corner of it that votes strongly Democratic).

My other answer would have been 'whatever our masters tell us' but with the downturn I'm not sure how long that's going to last.
