Today I took my oath of enlistment into DEP (Delayed Entry Program) for the United States Air Force. I will ship out after my semester of college which ends May 20th. They have me down for June 1st.

I have to say, it was a long 36 hrs. After I went to my recruiter's office, the limo (I kid you not) took me to a 4-star hotel in downtown Cleveland. After making a 15-minute trip to the fitness room to lift a bit, I made my way to the cafeteria where I had a dinner of House salad and water (Had to avoid sugars and proteins). Then I returned to the room and woke up at 4:00am for the start of my day of taking my physical. I ate a breakfast of dry toast and water and then boarded a snazzy pimp-like shuttle which took me and over two-three dozen other enlistees over to the Military enlistment center.

Between 6am and 11am, I went through everything from eye tests to hearing tests to the "duck walk" tests and yes...even a "turn your head and cough". I passed my physical, went to the cafeteria to have lunch (Subway sandwiches and lots of goodies), then spent the afternoon certifying my entry into D.E.P. in the U.S. Air Force. After that, I took my oath of enlistment and was sworn in along with one other fellow Military guy who was heading into the Navy. I called my recruiter, got the debrief, and then the limo came and picked me up to return me home.

One thing I noticed, the difference between being a civilian and sworn in...they immediately began treating me as "one of them" rather than some "kid taking tests". It is quite a feeling. I even have an unofficial Air Force I.D.

Just thought I'd share this with ya.

What did you need good eyesight for for meteorology?

Congratulations, by the way!

What the hell's with the weirdo diet?

I'd like to think our nations strapping young cannon-fodder are fed upon scrambled eggs and cheap beaf-steak.

Outside of basic training, I never saw an Air Force Chow Hall that didn't have an awesome salad bar.  I think it's all the Filipino and Korean dependents that work in the cafeterias.  Those ladies can't speak very good English, but they can prepare a hell of a meal.

Did you know that when Airmen are stationed at Army and Navy Bases that the USAF gives them extra money so the Airman can avoid the substandard Chow Halls those branches have?  I believe every enlisted man has their own dorm room too.  I know that was their goal, not 100% sure they've reached it at every base yet.  The Air Force has a much higher quality of living when compared to the other branches.  The fact that we very rarely get shot at helps a lot too.

So why does the government decide to spoil the air force guys? What's wrong with army and navy members? Discrimination I say. Smiley

They spend a lot more (on average) training us, they're just trying to protect their investment.

Haha, that's pretty funny actually.  Back in the day there were no bigger prostitute-patronizers than the US military.. last I heard under Bush that was outlawed.

It's always been against the law.

Of course they traditionally looked the other way unless there becomes a problem with a specific local place or area.  There were sections of Biloxi they told us not to go to when I was in tech school (summer '94).  Of course that was the.....third place we went first time we got our hands on a car.  If I remember correctly there were two Vietnamese "massage" parlors and a tattoo place on the same block.  We use to be able to drink in uniform too, now you can't even smoke in your uniform.  The military isn't the nutty place it was in the 70s and 80s.  Today's armed forces are amazingly straight edge.

....except for the racism and gangs in the Army.

Visiting prostitutes when you are 20 years old, living with no women around (just crowds of other young men), and about to go off to get killed is not 'nutty'.

Sitting at home in your bunk, reading the bible with sperm backing up to your retinas is, however.
