Crazy, crazy, scary creepy. That's what it is.

It looks like it would be a nice place to visit, though. You'd just have to get over everyone being some kind of Nordic Reformed Christian robot.

It used to be an island so was pretty isolated.

Urk is a former island in the IJsselmeer (previously Zuiderzee). Now it is a part of the new province Flevoland.

Situation before: (the best map I could find, this is a map of the plan for new land in the then still existing Zuiderzee, Urk is in the center of the map (and the lake).

Situation now:

As an island, it was isolated. Urk is known in the Netherlands for being dependent on fisheries, being Reformed Christian in the strictest way possible, large families and for cocain abuse by fishermen.

The 2006 election results for the Second Chamber are remarkable too:

CDA 3636 (37.6%)
SGP 3318 (34.3%)
CU  2118  (21.9%)
PVV 245 (2.5%)
VVD 119 (1.2%)
SP 98  (1.0%)
PvdA 91 (0.9%)
PvdD 9 (0.1%)
GrLinks 7 (0.1%)
D66 6 (0.1%)
Others 22 (0.2%)

PVV is a more extremist party than CU.

For the extreme Christian, meaning clerical, parties.
