I can understand the opposition though.

The same reason I'm running with the Netherlands. It has more to do with who's at the top of the other ticket.

Which is...?

I assume you have some reason to really like that swamp. I, on the other hand, have no problems with Ireland but it's not like I'm known for liking the place.

No, I don't particularly like it. If that was the case this would be me running with Sweden against you and Italy.

Or in a nutshell, it's basically each other against each other and our respective most hated countries.

Netherlands: Very protestant and liberal country.
Ireland: Very catholic and conservative country.

Was this meant to personally get me BRTD?

Ugh, you got me.  I voted for you.  Yeah, I know.. I voted against my own flesh and blood, but politically Ireland is still just beginning to come out of the Dark Ages.  I'll have to admit from a political standpoint the Netherlands gets it, Ireland doesn't.

I am known to be a bigger hater of France than The Netherlands but the latter is a close second.

Sure, the Netherlands have liberal drug policies... but nobody really actually *likes* the Dutch.

You two people should be banned from the forum immediatly for ignorance.

Btw, Flyers I keep telling you, STOP. POSTING. ABOUT. IRELAND. Please.

I should also add here that why would the Netherlands run with BRTD? There is more to the Netherlands then some certain districts of Amsterdam, an anti-woman's suffrage and television party is representated in parliament after all. We don't have that type of conservativism here (too Catholic, you see).

A country who legalised divorce only in 1995 with only 50% of the population agreeing is very conservative!

This is 2009. I will also note that despite the closeness of the result, there has not been a serious attempt by anyone significant or even close to try and get the result reversed. The vast majority now accept legalized divorce. I will also add that during the campaign there was little emphasis on religion (as such) or THREAT TO MORAL VALUES OMG!!!!111 by the 'no' campaign. There is no indigenous militant conservative tradition like there is in the US, and attempts to import here have failed because we just can't take them seriously. The reason for divorce's longetivity is imo due to the Irish people's "lazy paternalism" and high social conformism outside the major cities. But it's nothing like US conservativism. Two different words should be used.

I know. Perhaps I should have written very conservative for an European country.

European conservatism is very different of American conservatism.

AAARGGHHH... They're not "European conservatives" either, there is NOTHING like the cultural sameness in the European continent that there is from Maine to Alaska. "Europe" is not a cultural or social entity in any way except as a geographical and political expression. We all speak different languages and have different histories ffs. "Irish conservativism" (if such a thing exists really) is as close to "American conservativism" (ie. not close at all) as it is to "Italian conservativism". And let's not start on the regions or wondering whether the nation state is a coherent concept....

Uh, there's a ton of cultural differences between Maine and Alaska. Are San Francisco and rural Mississippi the same culturally? How about NYC and where Sarah Palin lives?

Learn to read, BRTD (Broken record I know).

I never said there wasn't any cultural differences between Maine and Alaska however I consider them minute when compared to the differences between Greece or Estonia and Ireland or Portugal. While it is true Europe is getting more homogenous, primarily due probably to mass media evidence, America is much much more so. Especially considering you are melting pot of migrants most of whom want to assimiliate...

Btw, back on topic - Keystone Phil would be not a suitable choice for Ireland really.

"Irish conservativism" (if such a thing exists really) is as close to "American conservativism" (ie. not close at all) as it is to "Italian conservativism".

Disagree. But only because, in some ways, "Italian conservatism" is unusually close to "American conservatism".

I'm not particularly sure BRTD would like (some of) the current political trends in the Netherlands.
