Before Hillary Clinton's 2008 Presidential run, what woman do you think could have ran?

Here are my choices and years I think it was possible:

Sen. Margaret Chase Smith (R-ME) in 1960 or 1968?
Sen. Nancy Kassebaum (R-KS) in 1988 or 1992.
Gov. Christine Todd Whitman (R-NJ) in 2000.
Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson (R-TX) in 2000.
Gov. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) in 2004.
Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AK) in 2004.

Victoria Woodhull (I-NY) in 1872.
Shirley Chisholm (D-NY) in 1972.
Patricia Schroeder (D-CO) in 1987.
Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) in 2000.
Carol Mosley Braun (D-IL) in 2004.

Do you mean won by "ran" because in that case:

Geraldine Ferraro: 1992 (If She DId Some Things Differently)
Blanche Lincoln: 2004

Carol Moseley Braun ran a campaign in 2004. Elizabeth Dole ran in the primaries in 2000. Shirley Chisolm also ran in I believe 1972.

BTW, the title of the post is not grammatically correct.

Women who could have RUN for President before Hillary.

Sorry (English teacher)

Eleanore Roosevelt, imaginable if FDR had nominated Henry Wallace as VP and Wallace were headed to defeat.

Early in 1948, there actually was discussion about nominating Eleanor Roosevelt for Vice President. There was a decent amount of press speculation, and there were some Democratic insiders pushing for it. The ND Democratic Party even called for a "Truman-Roosevelt" ticket.

No offer was made and Eleanor put the kibosh on the proposal. NY Dems also tried to recruit her to run for Governor of NY and for Senator, which she also turned down.

If she couls have survived her 1994 re-election bid, Ann Richards could certainly have been a contender for the Democratic nomination in 2000, and even if she couldn't have bested Gore for the nomination she would have had to have been considered as a potential VP nominee by Gore.
