I wonder if socially liberal white poors besides college students even exist.

One would expect my neighborhood to be full of them but according to the general consensus here, I am not a poor and I make slightly less than the median income (though only slightly). Of course the whites drive that number out no doubt. So white poors mostly live in places like eastern Kentucky

I'm thinking not particularly of college students, but of places that are hubs for former students, people living anti-materialist lives, organic farmers, former hippies, etc.

How about Missoula County?
I don't think you will find many affluent whites there.

Too many students (as we seem to be disqualifying those) and once you subtract those it becomes one of those places where the Dems are the richer people.

The main problem is with the thread's premise is, simply, that poor liberal whites tend to live in counties with a very large population, which means they don't dominate them. I suppose Duluth or one of those northwestern ex-logging places is your best bet.

Oh my yes.  Everyone who teaches here is poor, by definition, and many of those who come for extended visits are rather poor.

No there's quite a few affluent whites there, and they're all from out of state.

Very liberal even without the college kids, but its not poor either, especially once you look at incomes outside of college students.

How about those rural counties in Main, New Hampshire and Vermont then?
Of course they are not as poor as West Virginia, but they are surely below the national average.
And they seem to be pretty tolerant, if not outright liberal.

Income here is slightly above the national average, though there certainly are poor areas and a sizeable number of socially liberal white poors.

There are some isolated hippie areas that are extremely white, poor and socially liberal.  None of them come close to constituting entire counties.  I'll have to think on this one... Smiley

Mendocino and Humboldt might be the closest to it although they aren't uniformly liberal. They certainly do have hippy areas like Piercy and Arcata.

Vermont is too full of rich liberal Boston and New York retirees to be considered poor.  The state's per capita and media income is thousands of dollars higher than the national average.

Depending on which stat you use, it looks rather close to average. One can overstate the impact of "New York and Boston retirees"; the state wasn't completely depopulated before they arrived.

MHI: $40,972. National MHI: $50,740.

Vermont is not full of New York or Boston transplants. Vermont has a low rate of internal migration, maybe one of the lowest in the country (probably the Great Plains have lower rates, but maybe nowhere else).

Take Lamoille County, then, if you really don't like Washington County. MHI $39,356.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamoille_County,_Vermont

Of course, Vermont's state government is so small and the colleges in Montpelier also so small, that the influence on the demographics of Washington County is minimal. The county is decidedly rural in nature; Montpelier is no more than a rural very small city.

You can look at any of the other decidedly rural counties if you want. Caledonia, Orange, Windsor, etc. All have MHIs around $10,000 or more below the national average, all are overwhelmingly white, and all are decidedly social-liberal.
