Specter:

"Senator Reid assured me that I would keep my committee assignments and that I would have the same seniority as if I had been elected as a Democrat in 1980. It was understood that the issue of subcommittee chairmanships would not be decided until after the 2010 election. Some members of the caucus have raised concerns about my seniority, so the caucus will vote on my seniority at the same time subcommittee chairmanships are confirmed after the 2010 election. I am confident my seniority will be maintained under the arrangement I worked out with Senator Reid."

Specter seems to have gone out of his way to become persona non grata in the Senate

If he starts polling 15% behind Sestak, would he try Indie?

LOL

Sure, why not?

Then we'd just have to figure out how to beat him an independent primary. Smiley

interesting.

Specter needs to get his act together NOW, if he waits a few months and acts as Republican as possible to show "he hasn't changed" or whatever first, he's toast.

Tom Ridge announced today that he will not seek the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in next year's primary.

"I am enormously grateful for the confidence my party expressed in me, the encouragement and kindness of my fellow citizens in Pennsylvania and the valuable counsel I received from so many of my party colleagues," the former congressman, governor and Homeland Security director said in a news release.

Mr. Ridge's name had surfaced after Arlen Specter announced he was switching from the Republican to the Democratic Party for the election.

Kos said the poll he'll be releasing later today had Toomey beating Ridge in the primary, 41-33.

Eh, I guess that's believable. More accurate than the Asher commissioned poll having Ridge beating Toomey by close to forty points.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I concur.  But as a Democrat, I'd much rather be facing Toomey than Ridge.  Again I'm not gonna criticize ideological purity considering I feel Arlen's an opportunist and would prefer Sestak.

Actually, as a Dem, you guys should have entertained the idea that Ridge was weaker...

Ridge would have ensured a major third party challenge. See that one female candidate already in the Senate race? Remember when she insisted on challenging Ridge in 1994 and 1998? Remember how well she did? If the PA GOP is so much more conservative these days, quite a few of them would have jumped on board if she decided to abandon a Republican run and ran as an Independent/Constitution party candidate. She might not have broken double digits like she did in her Gubernatorial campaigns but a showing in the high single digits would crush Ridge. Plus, Ridge is clearly a much weaker campaigner so you wouldn't have to fear him winning over tons of moderate swing voters over Sestak or Specter.

Just a thought.

Good point.  I do remember Peg Luksik back in the 90s taking a chunk from Ridge.  However, could Ridge pull the mods from Montco and Bucks onto his side?  Then again I also remember some pretty weak Dems running against Ridge as well.  I would like my odds in a Sestak-Ridge-CP candidate race now that you said that.

Speaking of CP, do you know if crazy McDermott's running for anything soon?

Specter - 55%
Toomey - 31%

Sestak - 37%
Toomey - 32%

Torsella - 35%
Toomey - 33%

Specter easily defeating Sestak and Torsella in primary head to head match ups.

Ridge wouldn't pull enough moderates to offset the number of conservatives he'd lose. Just not happening. Plus, even if that was realistic, he can't do it. He hasn't had to really campaign since 1994 (1998 was a total joke). It doesn't matter now anyway.

Matthews: Okay, Hardball time. Can Toomey beat a Democrat?
Ridge: (pauses) Depends who the Democrat is.

Matthews: Could he beat Specter, the switcher?

Ridge: Uh, I don't know. I don't know. It depends on the nature of his campaign. But I think he's gonna have a problem-- [It's unclear whether Ridge is referring to Toomey or Specter here.]

Matthews: Who are you voting for?

Ridge: Uh, well, I'm gonna wait and see who's in the primary.

Matthews: No, you've gotta vote between Toomey the conservative Republican or Specter the ex-Republican. Who would you vote for?

Ridge: Well, it's a wonderful country, this America -- it's called secret ballot.

Matthews: Come on!

Ridge: (laughs)

Matthews: Aye or nay?

Ridge: You got my answer, Chris. That's Hardball!

“YOU DIDN’T BUY ME A LOCK? I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU TO BUY ME A F-ING LOCK!” The aide drew back. “We can’t play today, you’re too mad,” the underling said, and left the court—and within a week, had left the senator’s employ.
