I don't know anymore, the source for that article is talking about McCarthy!  I think it might be a mistake.  I won't email TPM about it though, I'd rather let it get out

She's running.

And with that, I am now officially endorsing Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

Good for her.

NY Dems shouldn't have to settle for an unelected appointee (not that Gillibrand is that bad, but in NY we can do better and the voters will have a choice). Either should be safe (barring unforseen developments) in the General.

Am I correct that if Maloney loses the primary she can still run for House?

No, the House primary would be at the same time as the Senate primary.

Im not a maloney fan but ny deserves better than an appointed senator.  I wonder who will run for her house seat... I lived in that district until a month ago

Caroline does live in Maloney's district.

RE: Above posts.  Maloney's efforts would be more respectable if:
1) They weren't done because she and her NYC establishment were passed over
2) If they weren't based on "character issues" that will tear down both candidates in the primary and thus weaken whoever the eventual nominee is.

Oh well. I would hate to lose her in the House. Though if she thinks she has 50/50 or better chance, she should go for it. In theory she should, but I am concerned that the establishment would be mad at her for challenging Gillibrand.

At this point I'm really not sure who I want to win (and who I will be voting for). While I disagree with Maloney's choice to challenge Gillibrand, if not simply to keep her in the House, I don't see why I shouldn't vote for her over Gillibrand once she is in the race.

At the very least this is bad for Democrats for three reasons:
1)   It diverts money from substantive, policy races to this one,  a matter of “character.”  Unlike Specter, Gillibrand is unlikely to shift positions after her election.  There are so many big races this cycle and money is tight during a recession, it’s a risk.
2)   It further entrenches the power of the local political establishment.  The reason why Maloney can do this in the first place is a lot of NY power-wielders, the remnants of Tammany Hall, are mad that Paterson didn’t go through them.  Although Gillibrand is having to court the local and national political establishment now (Rahm, Sharpton, Meeks, etc.) she isn’t a product of it.
3)   And, as I said, the type of race Maloney will be running will be personal and negative, not good for either side.  If Maloney were to run strictly on her on record, I wouldn’t have as low of an opinion of her, but all of her press releases and interviews thus far have been in the “this is bad for Democrats” category.

It’s good for democracy, of course, for voters to have a choice.  I don’t really see Maloney as the grassroots alternative to the establishment choice though.

I'm not saying I approve of Maloney's tactics at all. I don't think she should run either. But once she is in the race, I might as well vote for whichever of the two I support more on the issues. I can't stop her from running now (not that I ever could).

Let's see - who should I vote for?

The person who is honest about where she stands (and I don't agree with).

Or the person who's changed many of her views completely in the hopes of winning people over. (and I don't agree with)

I generally prefer being stabbed in the front, rather than the back, so...

PS: Meh, for me, I'd support the yonger of the two because the Senate needs more under-50s and longer terms means senators can wield more influence

NY (ahem... Goldman Sachs) needs as little influence as humanly possible.

Well, I wasn't speaking as a New Yorker.  There's always Tasini if you want zero influence Smiley

RE: Your post, my one caveat would be that Maloney probably would do the exact same thing were she in Gillibrands shoes.  The fact that one happens to have always had a liberal constituency does not make her necessarily less of a do-anything-say-anything politician.

Now Bill Clinton has commited to a fundraiser for Maloney.
I thought Gillibrand was Hillary's protege.

Wait...what? For real? How? Is Bill deliberately asking for trouble from Obama and Co.? Things are going to get ugly in the White House...

"Also of interest: Bill Clinton will be appearing at a Maloney fundraiser scheduled for July 20. Clinton isn't wading into the race with an endorsement at this point, though; this was in the works long before Maloney announced her run, as payback for Maloney's 2008 primary support for Hillary Clinton, and he also headlined a Gillibrand fundraiser in March. "

So says SSP. Not exactly OMG CLINTOPN GETTING UGLY!!!

Only for a month.  I'm moving to Hawaii in a couple of weeks.

Am I the only one who finds Lunar's crush on Gillibrand incredibly annoying?
