During the campaign, Obama promised that he would put an end to federal raids on medical marijuana clinics in states where it is legal. You know states' rights, something Republicans used to be for.

So this brings up a question: Can anyone opposed to doing this explain what horrible things will result because of it?

Let me help you with some of this BRTD.  The entropic end state here would that the olds would become pot heads en mass, and in lieu of cutting maintenance checks to their collegiate issue, would divert the funds to bud procurement.  In other words, adios le laissez les bon temps roulez of the young scions. This is equivalent to a burglar who robs everyone at a restaurant, and then before running away with the loot, pays for their desert.

Sure, it's nice, but to claim that Obama respects States' Rights anymore than the outgoing administration is laughable.

And that's a bad thing how? The only thing states rights are good for period is advancing the rights of people more than the feds do.

Is it possible that we might see federal legalization of medical marijuana if Obama is really this supportive of the state laws permitting it?

Silly liberals, states' rights only apply to segregation and gay marriage.

Slightly more people openly grow marijuana who don't have real diseases, but no big diff.  The feds never did like prosecuting apparent cancer patients 'n stuff. it's bad PR

Well, I'll just say that part of the risk calculation for a medical marijuana dispensary includes the chances that the feds will raid and steal all of their marijuana, they are honestly worried about such things -- especially in San Diego where the local police help the feds raid places.  This also applies a lesser extent to the large-scale growers.

I would expect if the feds adopted a formal policy of non-intervention that greater access would be provided, if nothing else.

Marijuana shouldn't be illegal at all. Cigarettes are bad for you. Alcohol is bad for you. Fast-food is bad for you. Should we outlaw these things too?

It's not the federal government's job to protect people from themselves.

The original laws against marijuana were racially-based anyway.

How often did raids ever happen?  I was under the impression that states that legalized it mainly got away with it and the federal gov't turned a blind eye.

For the most part, yes.  But every once in awhile....

I don't know if it was 1 a week or 2 a year, probably closer to 2 a year.  My Google Fu is weak tonight.

When did I say that? I expressly said "Sure, it's nice". That said, it's ridiculous to hold this as some sort of proof that Obama respects states' rights anymore than Bush did.
