Going with the title from that one article which named possible female Presidential candidates.

I'd say the two most likely are:

Kay Hagan
Kirsten Gillibrand

In 2016,2020,2024 the latter dates more for Gillibrand.

Considering she is my Representative, go Gillibrand!

I expect Gillibrand to run for president.  I think it's a little bold to say anything else.

There's a chance that Kirsten may stay out of the presidential campaign list if she follows in Schumer's footsteps into Senate leadership.

The NYC media haven't been very nice to her since the announcement was made, but according to the NY Times, she is considering running for President one day.  Paterson however has also said that he wants to run for President.  Could we have two candidates from NY that year?  We'll see.

Maybe.  But what about Maria Cantwell?  Too liberal?  I couldn't disagree with her more on most issues, but I was watching her during the Geithner hearings and she really impressed me (superficially, at least).

Gillibrand's relative moderacy on the issues certainly makes her an attractive prospect, though.

I like Cantwell, but does she really have enough name recognition to make a credible run for the presidency?

Paterson will never be President. Gillibrand would have a hell of a time getting through the primaries herself with her current record but she is getting ready to go leftward, so we'll see. She still wouldn't be likely to receive my support under any serious scenario.

According to PC I'm even more left than you. I'm willing to throw out most small details if the candidate is Populist however, which I find Gillibrand to be. I'm simply attracted to populist candidates. A turn leftward would make me like her even more however.

They'd run in different years, and, to actually quote Paterson about 2016 "Once you go black, you don't go back."

"Once you go black, you don't go back."

lol

Personally I think its a little too soon to be talking about the candidate field for 2016.  Although I hope Obama will win again in 2012, there are no guarantees there and the outcome of that election is likely to heavily influence the Democratic primary in 2016.  Plus, Gillibrand still has to survive at least one potential primary showdown and two general elections before the end of Obama's first term.

"Once you go black, you don't go back."

Haha ! Smiley

That's actually the (reversed) slogan and ad campaign of the Young Salzburg Socialists for the March 1 state elections here (Salzburg was a hardcore ÖVP state from 1945-2004, when empress Burgstaller relieved us from the "Black" Conservatives:

I made a thread about it, but in case anyone missed it, Paterson did actually say that:

I support female candidates for higher office as much as I can and I've had my eye on Gillibrand for a while.  I was concerned she couldn't move up in NY with her moderate record,  so needless to say I was ecstatic with her appointment. Smiley

I think it's a little early to say what Gillibrand's going to do.

For some reason I get the feeling that Gillibrand will run for President someday. Probably in 2016. One of those feelings.

Cantwell is intelligent, hard-working, driven and isn't afraid to dig into complex policy issues.  However, she is a staid, stiff performer on the campaign trail and there have been several reports about her lack of people skills.  This would likely derail a Presidential bid, even though she has the intellectual guns to handle the policy side of the job.

On another note, why don't more people talk about Susan Collins in 2012? She will be the prime age, she will be an experienced Senator, she is a moderate, she could certainly win Maine + NH.

She'll never become President, let alone survive the primaries.

She will be the prime age, she will be an experienced Senator, she is a moderate, she could certainly win Maine + NH.

If Senator Collins did run in 2012, I can assure you outside of New England, that she wouldn't have a chance of winning any states due to the Republican base being overwhelmingly conservative. A moderate Republican running in the present climate of the Republican Party would be committing an act of politicial suicide.

Maine of course, but New Hampshire is doubtful.  Those two states would be the only ones she'd have a chance in though; she'd lose everywhere else massively.

We are talking about the primaries, right?

um....

are you talking about Representative Gillibrand or Senator Gillibrand, because the latter, who will be elected in 2010, is a lot different

Susan Collins doesn't have the personality or temperament, even without the conservative primary voters issue.

Yo, you do realize you have to be *OUTSIDE* of the machine politics machine in order to advance to national office, right?  Madigan not only became part of the machine, she was born into it.

The electable politicians from these states (remind me how many Chicago & Phillie presidential candidates we've had?) are the ones who leap over the establishment.  Obama attempted to primary Bobby Rush if y'all remember.
