I've been looking into Iorio, and she seems like she would be a formidable opponent against Connie Mack.  I would go so far as to say that she could be the favorite if we don't nominate someone like him or McCollum.

Rep Buchanan (R) is looking into it too and has a lot of money, but I don't take him seriously

Once the race starts up more I'll figure out who to support, but as long as the Republicans hold it I'll be happy.

When is that picture of Bob Smith from? Didn't he used to have gray hair?

I seem to remember his wanting to run in 2004, too, and no one paying attention then.

kos has done some polling.

Democratic Primary

Meek 17
Boyd 8
Gelber 3
Undecided 72

Republican Primary

Crist 57
McCollum 11
Rubio 4

McCollum 28
Rubio 12

Crist on the list shouldn't be taken too seriously though...

General Election

Crist (R) 49
Meek (D) 28

Meek (D) 31
Rubio (R) 22

Crist (R) 52
Gelber (D) 21

Gelber (D) 23
Rubio (R) 23

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/1/30/115114/466/655/690923

Looks like Crist's floor would be in the low 50's and Meek's is low 30's.

You can always pay a polling firm to do a poll for Mack?

Former Senator Bob Smith (R-NH):
“If I were to become the next senator from Florida, the 18 years of seniority from my service in New Hampshire would make me one of the most senior Republicans in the U.S. Senate.”

lol.  Like Lautenberg is for the Democrats, right?

I read an article today that said that the reason no one important wants to run is that they fear they wont be able to raise the necessary money to compete with the economy being so bad. I can't find the article now but thats the gist of what it said. It also said that someone like Vern Buchanan who is loaded would have the advantage cause he can self fund if necessary. I disagree with that sentiment but never the less I want to know what some of you think of this theory.

Connie Mack won't run for the Senate.
He defers to Crist.

I almost forgot about this. Looks like Mack is trying to build up some brownie points with Crist. Maybe he is thinking about retaking his daddy's seat and if he were to take down Bill Nelson he would definately need Crist's help.

This is an odd move by Mack.  I think he would have been favored against Marco Rubio in the primary and would have been favored against Meek in the general.  Crist is far from a slam dunk to run, so unless Mack knows something that the rest of us don't....and if he does, maybe Mack wants Crist's backing for governor?  Confusing.

Politico is jumping on the notion of a Rubio-Crist primary, due to Crist's dismal approval ratings (something in the 20%'s) among Republicans.  Previously, Marco had always been running for "Governor/Senaor, Whatever Crist Doesn't Want 2010," now Marco seems more open-minded.  I think there's a lot of good secret-keepers down there in Florida politics.

If Republicans were smart they would just let Crist run and win the senate seat. But no one ever said they were smart.

Since the Democrats have passed on several of their more electable candidates (Sink, Boyd, Klein), I see no reason why the Republicans should have to settle, although Mack bowing out certainly alters the equations a bit.  It's still an open seat in Florida in an off-year and that means something.

In my opinion, when you are in the minority and are only 1 seat away from not being able to fillibuster, you can't be picky about who your candidate is. You have to take the most electable candidate that you can. Once you are in the majority, then you can worry about getting "better Republicans."

I'm a bit undecided about what we should do.  I know the expression "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush", but if we have a significant chance at getting the two in the bush, should we go for it?

I just think that at this point in time, having a tossup Governors race is better than having a tossup senate seat as we need to have as many seats as possible. I think whatever race Crist doesn't run will be a tossup, I'd just rather the slam dunk be the senate seat.
