So, I've decided to see who the Atlas considers to be the greatest Senators in US history.  You can nominate up to 7 people, and I'll leave the nominations up for a week.  The only requirement is that the Senator must have already left office, so Ted Kennedy, Robert Byrd, etc., cannot be nominated.

Cool idea. You should do ''worst senators'' at some point too. I tried to make sure that all of mine hadn't been mentioned yet.

It is a great list JS; at least it is after my subtractions and additions:

Frank Church (D-ID)
Mark Hatfield (R-OR)
Paul Wellstone (D-MN)
Paul Simon (D-IL)
Jacob Javits (R-NY)
J. William Fullbright (D-AR)
Howard Metzenbaum (D-OH)
William Proxmire (D-WI)
Eugene McCarthy (D-MN)
Hubert Humphrey (D-MN)
Lyndon Baines Johnson (D-TX)
William V. Roth, Junior (R-DE)
Margaret Chase-Smith (R-ME)
Paul Tsongas (D-MA)
Estes Kefauver (D-TN)
Alan Simpson (R-WY)
Mike Mansfield (D-MT)
Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY)
Warren Rudman (R-NH)

Henry Clay
Danial Webster
Arthur Vandenberg
Richard Russell (even though he was  a segregationist racist)
John C. Calhoun

And the Senate in 2000 oddly enough apparently adopted a resolution which reminds us of these worthies:

Robert Taft (not one of my personal favorites because he was an isolationist protectionist but whatever)
Robert LaFollette
Robert Wagner

Stennis was a great Senator, and I would've included him, except for the 7 person limit, which has been ignored Tongue

John C. Calhoun (Democrat - South Carolina, 1832-1843, 1845-1850)

Do you even know what his principles were? Here's a hint: they weren't moderate.

I'm not voting on favorites, I'm voting on the greatest Senators, and Calhoun was great.

You admire Byrd. If Lott is a racist, Byrd is just as much of one.

Torie, of course I cited my leftist heroes.  You expected less?  I didn't venture into the 19th century either because -- well -- I thought you or GM might.  I mean...you guys actually LIVED it.  <grin>

I gotta say though, I am shocked you left LBJ intact but struck Roth and Chase-Smith.
