Long Island high schools have produced 59 out of 300 national semifinalists in the Intel science competition.  That's more than double that produced by NYC high schools, as well as that for the entire state of California.  25 of the 59 students are btw Asian.

Long Island has always done very well in these competitions, and as a whole Long Island has among the best schools in the country.

I wonder how many students in districts that decide to mix religion in Science class made this list....

All depends on what you focus on, of course. Is Ward Melville High School really that extraordinary? No, probably not, but they put a lot of school resources into this single competition.

Of course, it helps to have the money to throw around for any competitions. So Long Island is one of a handful of areas with that sort of advantage.

You can thank Arnold and Prop. 13 for California sucking.

Studies show a high percentage of them will take their skills out of long island after college, so it doesn't really matter.
