So Republicans want to give the South back to the Democrats and return the Southwest to Mexico?

Not exactly.  1864 implies that they think they're still in war.  "Soon to become Mexico" is because of their fears of Mexican immigrants taking over the country.

I know of few if any IL GOPers who view things this way (except for WI LOL). Even here in IL it's more about the stereotypical Chicago machine itself than the product of the machine giving the name to Blagoland.

Lulz. Living in CA, the Republicans I know are just as socially liberal as, if not more so than, the Democrats. There is one major exception to this, but there always are exceptions.

Yeah but you live in San Fran. Go off to San Diego or whatever and you start encountering some of the crazies. Don't forget the Dominionists, Minute Men, and Birchers hang out in Cali still.

Even outside of San Francisco, CA is not a state known for huge social divisions. Here, the Republicans are the party of economic neoliberalism & the Democrats are the party of economic leftism.

If the Central Valley had more people, you'd see more of a social divide.

Yet at the same time the GOP would become less competitive here. Nominating socially liberal execs like Poizner is a pretty good strategy hereabouts.

Good point.  It's amazing how the times have changed.  Virginia and NC are becoming more like the Yankees in the Northeast, while West Virginia is becoming more and more southern.

By the way I want to make clear that this map is a joke and I did not mean to offend any republicans.  I hate the republican party as much as Howard Dean, but I don't hate republicans.
For those to whom it was not clear, the map was based on the (in)famous, "the world according to Reagan" map from the '80s.

I'm glad to know that Prop. 8 got defeated in a landslide.

By the way, I found a map of the world according to Dubya:

Comparing the two maps it is rather funny how the conservative worldview (or at least what is perceived as such) has changed in the last 25 years or so.

Some notable similarities and differences:
- Acidrainia, which was once a wholly-owned subsidiary of the US, remains just like the US, except for the French part.
- The oilfields remain in place, but California has become Librulfornia and has absorbed the environmental freaks of the Northwest.
- The Welfare Bums of the Northeast have now become Terrorist coddlers.
- Real America has been divided into Bush's ranch, the Base (the South) and the rest of 'Merka.
- Mariachiland has become the land of Illegal immigrants.
- The russian colony of Cuba is still Commie land.
- The European Socialists and Pacifists have become unreliable allies, while Poland and the other Godless Communists have become Bribed Allies.
- Palestinians still don't have a country.
- "Their China" has become a Wal Mart factory.

It is somewhat amusing to see the confusion between the world view of a particular leader, and the view of the party overall. I appreciate your earlier comment:
By the way I want to make clear that this map is a joke and I did not mean to offend any republicans.  I hate the republican party as much as Howard Dean, but I don't hate republicans.
, except that the maps reflect a satire on a particular president. I can confidently state that not only Republicans, but much of the Republican Party does not subscribe to W's world view.

That's not the point. The point is that party identification in CA is based primarily on economic ideology & ethnicity. Social issues are not something that divide the state in terms of party politics. There are large numbers of socially liberal Republicans & socially conservative Democrats.
