More than likely this is the left in Israel trying to keep power in the face of the upcoming elections, where I'm pretty much confident Netanyahu's coalition will take power otherwise.  May work, may not work, we'll see.

Something like this should have been done months ago, however.

Air raiding civilians as a political tool. Lovely.

I guess 280 innocent lives is nothing compared to a won election.

Israel needs to send those ruthless terrorists straight to hell.

Why don't they start with their own leaders.

Israel's response is in the right direction, however it is disproportionately overdone.

It doesn't matter if Israel overdoes it or underdoes it or does nothing at all, rockets will still be fired randomly at their civilians.  The local authorities in Gaza will do nothing to stop them (because they are the ones launching them).  It's a lose/lose for them, just like it always is.

Since when have wars ever been fought proportionately? And if countries were required to fight proportionally, then the US would in Afghanistan would have had to wait until they killed 3,000 people and once they reached that milestone simply pack up and left because they finished attacking proportionally.

This is one of the oddest conflicts. Usually the stronger power would just wipe out their opposition completely and start from scratch (see: Manifest Destiny). This model clearly isn't working out too well.

Well, when the white americans slaughtered the Indians and the Nazis slaughtered the Jews, the key was that the slaughtered populations were really very small compared to the population of slaughterers.  It has never worked that well to just slaughter a huge majority of the population in the interests of the minority - even in Africa the whites didn't manage to do that.  It seems to be more efficient to keep a majority population alive and practice the sort of vampiric 'slow-genocide' of capitalism on them.

Israel is in the right. Hamas needs to somehow be destroyed and I have a feeling every time there is any amount of sustained peace the Palestinian people begin to start thinking about alternative options in terms of government and thus Hamas decides that a renewel of the conflict is in order to increase tension, nationalism and fear among the people. Basically I see this just as Hamas trying to retain power by keeping the war alive.

Who really thinks that the Israelis should just put up with constant missile attacks? If we got that kind of thing from Mexico there would be a full-scale invasion in a week.

The election has probably influenced the timing, but something like this was always going to happen sooner or later (and probably always sooner).

Something being done by both sides, basically. Hamas aren't helping by using civilian buildings as rocket sites (which is a violation of the rules of war).

I'm just mentioning how abrupt and overwhelming Israel's response has been. Face it, most of us were caught off guard with this. I mean, as the above poster stated, rockets being fired at Israel is like the sun coming up in the morning over there. Usually, Israel strikes back, but it's just small operation, nothing like this.

Here are the facts folks:

Israel is a nation (right or wrong)

Hamas is attacking Israel from civilian areas

Israel is attacking those sites

If Hamas would stop and respect Israel (again right or wrong) Israel would also leave them alone

Maybe both of them will blow each other off the face of the Earth and we'll be done with them for eternity.

One can only hope I guess.

Even that wouldn't do it.  It would just fill back in with more asshats killing each other over the same sh**t.

They way the media report this, you'd think there had been nothing but peace and tranquility in Israel and Gaza prior to this.

Well, if it wasn't anything new about it, it wouldn't be a sign that his appearance was drawing near.  Wink

well, I can think of a couple of signs that have come to pass:
1) reformation of Israel
2) increase in wickedness
3) nations begin to turn against Israel

and then,  there are major signs yet to come:
1) rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem
2) AntiChrist ruling from Temple
3) Abomination of Desolution set up in the Temple
4) Mark of the beast
5) etc, etc...basically covering the unsealing of the 1st 6 seals of Revelation including the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Then, finally, the 7th seal is unsealed and all the following events unfold in rapid succession on the day Christ returns:
1) cosmic signs (sun turning black and moon turning to color of blood)
2) the appearance to the whole Earth of Jesus in the sky
3) the Rapture of the Church
4) the start of the Wrath of God

so, I expect the Israeli/Arab conflict to continue its spiral into an ever more dangerous situation.

Ok, I shall disregard all the other weird nonsense from your post, but do you really believe 'wickedness' has increased?

I can imagine what is your definition of wickedness, but even accepting it, what time frame are we talking about?  Since the '80s?  Since the beginning of the human race?

I find it hard to take seriously the idea that there is anything new going on - people are what they always have been:

Yep, that's what they were saying in 1975.  Everybody expects the world to end on their watch, everybody has always been wrong.  I blame our ego's.
