The man spent those dreadful last years of the Nixon Administration as Chairman of the Republican National Committee. In fact, he seems to have been the first to suggest to Tricky Dick that it might have been in his best interests to resign:

must have conferred with him about it
before it was made public, since it would be ludicrous to leave a Party hanging with its leader in the wind. Are there any sources that attest to his knowledge of the events?
