Calcutta is in West Bengal which has been ruled by the Communist party of India(Marxist) for nearly 40 years now. The other state to embrace communism in India is Kerela. Both have horrible economies but in other factors like literacy, women's equality etc. they are much better. But it still cannot be denied that West bengal and Calcutta, which at the time of the departure of the brits was India's richest area, has become one of the poorest today. And I do blame the communists and all the little bitches that always fukc up economic progress. The communists act more like China these days though, but still city and statewide strikes are common. Business is still scared as hell to come to the state. Tata just moved their plans to build a car plant near Calcutta to Gujarat due to bullsh**t over land.

Nope, the shift was not that big.  I was always socially liberal, I just fine tuned my economic views to better reflect my observation and experience.
