Both Drudge and Politico says the Post is reporting this, which makes it ultra-sketch, but MSNBC is reporting this as the New York Times.  But MSNBC isn't really filled with people smart enough to know the difference.

Uh....the NYT is definitely reporting it.  Didn't you see this link posted upthread?:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/22/nyregion/22caroline.html

Of course, their only source is "a person told of her decision".

Interesting.  They are both reporting it as their own confirmation, that gives even more legitimacy to the story.  I just browsed the NYP article but I didn't see a reference to the NYT anywhere in it.

My bad on not being more accurate.

MSNBC is claiming this second that BREAKING NEWS: SHE HAS NOT WITHDRAWN HER BID

CNN also says that Caroline has decided to opt out "according to three Democratic sources":

http://edition.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/01/21/caroline.kennedy/

So this isn't just the NY Post.

this is extremely conflicting.  NBC is reporting most recently and that she has not decided to drop out and taking the other previous reports into account with this.

It's possible that either: there was a miscommunication between Kennedy & the governor's office

Or it could be that Caroline hasn't told some of her closest aides that she isn't withdrawing and, of course, these aides not hearing otherwise, deny such stories when they get calls from the news agencies

Kennedy's rebounded to 8.0 on Intrade.  Still way below where she was before, but she was down to 3.6 a couple of hours ago.  (No, I don't think that really means anything.  I just find it amusing to track.)

She's slowly regaining ground, minute by minute.  It's now:

Cuomo 50.0
Maloney 25.0
Kennedy 15.0

Presumably, within the next couple of hours, we'll have some sort of solid confirmation on whether she's dropped out or not, and her share price will either crash again or skyrocket.

I'm starting to bump up Maloney on my own personal odds-o-meter.

Like I said, Kennedy could run for her House seat since Caroline lives in her district.  And Maloney has probably the biggest organizations (women's groups) behind her while there is no Upstate-organization.

Who has the men's groups behind them?

Well, to be fair, the Democratic ticket is already pretty heavily on male and women are very conscious about their 16-17ish total in the Senate.  Men don't really care whether they have 83 or 84 seats while Maloney comes from the old-school-feminist background.

If Paterson selects a man to be the Senator, I'd bet any amount of money that his Lt. Gov will be a woman.

Paterson doesn't really have an likely female competitors that I'm aware of, and I can't really see the women flocking to a Cuomo challenge or a Guiliani challenge or a Lazio challenge.

I don't know, I'm just trying to think like New York Democratic strategists think, and they're extremely self-conscious about the overall image of their top statewide office holders (whether they'll all be male, or they won't have a single Upstater, or if they won't have a single upstater).

That have would worked, except that their made-up excuse doesn't make much sense.  Caroline Kennedy doesn't want the seat because Uncle Teddy is sick?  Well, he's been ill for months.  That hasn't changed.

I have to hand it to Paterson, like it or not, he's showing that he has some real balls here.

Honestly, I think Kennedy had more negatives than benefits.  Also, Paterson has always been rogue with his appointments if I remember right.

I don't think it needs to make sense as long as it's an emotional play.  It's a better reason than most people who withdraw their names at the last second.  Nydia Vasquez obviously got told early on that she wouldn't be the pick and withdrew her name without going through all of the broo-hahah.

That it's an emotional play only makes it look worse, if you ask me.  Only a real idiot is going to buy that excuse - and trying to get pity by using a dying man for a lame excuse is contemptible.

No Idea who's getting it. All I know is that Paterson said he wanted to pick a woman at the inauguration.

I think it will be Cuomo (which it should have been from Jump Street, in my opinion)...but if Paterson really said it would be a woman, then I dunno.

Per the 10PM news, the AP is now reporting that Caroline Kennedy is still in it. (No link yet)

Who knows?
