Gillibrand's event was scheduled, but not necessarily Paterson's part in it.  That was breaking news.

Gillibrand's event was scheduled, but not necessarily Paterson's part in it.  That was breaking news.

By the wording of the article it seems as if the aides were denying that Paterson's appearance was at all related to the Senate appointment. That was just my take. It is ambiguous. I just don't think it was breaking news. More like people started paying attention to her more and dug that up.

Paterson is now denying that this was the case:

Wow, today has been exciting with all the media scrambling. I'm ecstatic that Caroline is out.

I'm getting excited for Senator Gillibrand, but still not getting my hopes up. After all, for all we know Paterson is picking Fran Drescher, who did an interview yesterday saying she still wants it.

PS: Of course Paterson is going to deny both of those things Tongue  That's standard politicking.

He owes it to Kennedy to deny every suggestion that she withdrew because of anything besides her own free will decision.  He wants everyone to think that he might have picked her if she didn't back out.

Apparently, there's been talk that Caroline might be appointed ambassador to the UK:

Oh, I'm going to throw up. Seriously. I feel like I am going to be physically ill. Just like Grandpop, eh Caroline? Give me a break.

"The work I am doing now I think will translate well to the work I would do as a Senator. We have to put New York first and we have to fight for our middle class families," said Gillibrand according to a story 12 minutes ago when a reporter caught up to her in DC
http://news10now.com/content/all_news/132219/gillibrand-comments-on-senate-position/Default.aspx

that doesn't sound like someone who hasn't been told that she's the pick yet when Paterson is selecting his guy/gal tomorrow.

I'm not certain it's Gillibrand yet though

Ambassadorships like this are prestige positions, always have been. It's kind of perfect for her. She brings the glamor and the attention and makes the UK feel special, and career diplomats will do all the hard work like they always did. I think Bush appointed an Ambassador to France who didn't even speak French because he was a good ol' boy who gave enough money to his campaign.

Don't know where he got it, but it shows up if you search Google News for "Gillibrand".  I don't see any other news organizations picking it up yet.

Intrade:

Gillibrand 63.9
Cuomo 33.5
Maloney 9.0

For a year or so max. Not enough time to make a difference really.

You should thank him more for giving you guys a centrist Democrat in a state that could have easily supported a far-left one.

Whoever gets elected to the 20th will be destroyed in 2010 anyway.

Confirmations abound about the time (http://www.cbs6albany.com/news/senate_1260304___article.html/says_paterson.html). Still no confirmations on the actual pick. Are the people close to Paterson finally keeping their mouths shut? Would be a nice change from the cluster over the past day (not that it wasn't fun, but still...).

Politico confirms that Paterson is holding a news conference with the NY congressional delegation at noon tomorrow, "where it's expected he'll name Clinton's successor", but they don't say that it's definitely Gillibrand:

As I said in another ambassador thread, I know that many these are appointments are based on friendships/thanks for political help. I'm just disgusted that it would be her and how we'll have to hear about Grandpop Joe serving in the position before (and was a complete disaster).

I will point out that the district is only R+3, and that was before 2008. It saw some of the strongest swings to Obama in the state. Not that it's at all guaranteed to be held by the Democrats, of course, but be careful making such declarations. Party registration isn't everything. The special election will probably be held while Obama is still in honeymoon, etc.

This should also make my next Congressional race pretty interesting.

December 14th.

Ok, I changed my prediction in light of recent events

Remember Paterson basically says he wants either a Hispanic, an Upstater, or a woman.

The Hispanics, I realized, lost their only two candidates since Alfonso took a job at the White House and Nydia took her name out.

He also said he wants someone who can win elections.  With one of the lobbying groups effectively mitigated, why not hit up the last two simultaneously?

Who better than Blue Dog Upstater Kirsten Gillibrand?  She won her district with more votes than anyone else in New York, she's a rising star (elected in 2006), and as Cillizza said, she's an amazing fundraiser.

Hell, she even looks like a young Hillary so it'd be an easy transition:

my final prediction is Kirsten.  If I'm right, I could even be predicting a future president Smiley

Why would you not back the one who is a member of the Blue Dog Caucus?  Shucks sir, you can be surprising.
