2009: President Obama (D) takes office and within his first week he closes Guantanamo Bay, bans torture, eases restrictions on stem cell research, and slows down plans to drill for oil offshore. In March the US backs out of the first round of negotiations with Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership countries on a possible free trade agreement after President Obama (D) states that he won’t sign the agreement. In July the Ares I-X test flight goes off with little trouble. Congress passes healthcare reform in late summer; with everyone able to join in a national healthcare plan ran by the government, and it’s signed into law a week later by President Obama (D). In October a plebiscite is held in Puerto Rico, giving voters the option to vote to continue its territorial status and relationship with the United States or to pursue a constitutionally-viable permanent non-territorial status. 50.4% favor pursuing a non-territorial status and a Constitutional Convention is called together the following month, a referendum is set to take place in 2010, if passed it would be presented to Congress. By the end of the year the recession has dissolved and the economy is on its way back with unemployment reaching as high as 12% at its peak before Congress restarted the Public Works Administration in May. The Oasis of the Seas cruise ship made its maiden voyage in December, but plots of a terrorist attack are intercepted and swashed before the ship is launched. Though Chrysler is unable to survive the recession after Congress pushed the Big 3 to make changes in the vehicles it makes, and is sold in three parts; Jeep to GM (merging with its Hummer brand, but under the Jeep brand), Chrysler to Hyundai, and Dodge to VW.

2010: The embargo on Cuba is lifted in February, after President Obama (D) meets with Raúl Castro, and Castro agrees to release political prisoners and to see that Cuban civil rights are not infringed on. Cuba begins to prosper months later with American tourists flawing to the island in the spring months. In August a referendum is held in Scotland about gaining independence from the UK; with a 50.5% vote in favor for independence on January 1, 2011. In September the International Space Station is completed and the Space Shuttle Program is retired. In October a terrorist attack takes place in Las Vegas by Mexican drug lords who want American Drug officers out of Mexico; this prompts the US to invade Mexico as part of its war against drugs and terrorism. In November a referendum is held in Puerto Rico to determine if Puerto Rico is to become the 51st state or to become an independent country, 72% vote in favor of becoming a state and this is presented to Congress. Democrats win more seats in both houses of congress due to President Obama’s (D) approval rating of 64%. In early December, GM releases the Hy-wire in limited markets within the US with planes to be released in all markets by 2013, while the Chevy Volt was launched in October in all markets.

2011: On January 1 Croatia joins the European Union and Scotland gains its independence. In January Southern Sudan holds a referendum on its independence; with a 72% vote yes for independence that will take place in on January 1, 2012. Iran agrees to allow the UN into its nuclear plants in April, where they find no signs of a possible weapons program. The US reestablishes diplomatic ties with Iran in May, after the UN’s report and President Obama (D) meeting with 2nd term President Ahmadinejad and Supreme Leader Khamenei, in which both countries agree to work on a way to insure peace within the region. The hot topic of the meeting is the establishment of a Palestinian state over an Israeli one. President Obama (D) then meets with members of both the leaders of Israel and the West Bank in July, in which a new Palestinian state is established out of Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. This brings peace to the region as Palestine’s neighbors help to insure against Islamic extremism within the new state. In August the start of manned test flights of both the Crew Exploration Vehicle and Ares I rocket take place with minor problems. In September the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline from Russia to Germany is completed. In October a coup d'état takes place in Saudi Arabia forcing US and EU forces to invade and overthrow Fahd Al-Aziz. While in Eastern Russia nuclear weapons are stolen months earlier by Al-Aziz who planned to use the weapons on the US and EU, but he is forced to leave the country before the invasion takes place. This caused a civil war within Saudi Arabia, as the US and EU forces take over the day-to-day operations of the country; the Saudi royal family had been executed by Islamic extremist soon after the coup. While trying to settle the situation in Saudi Arabia, the EU goes looking for Al-Aziz in Syria. As the US forces are stretched to the max as the last of the troops pull out of Iraq, in Afghanistan more troops are sent in to search and destroy all drug farms and both al-Qaeda and the Taliban, and the occupation of northern Mexico to combat against the drug trade. In November ships off both the West Coast of the US and the EU are intercepted and searched to find that 4 ships were carrying stolen nuclear weapons by Al-Aziz; the ships where heading to Los Angeles, Long Beach, Rotterdam and Antwerp.

2012: On January 1 South Sudan gains its independent from Sudan. In February the EU captures Al-Aziz as he tried to leave Syria for Iraq. In March the UAE is given the green light by the UN to annex the former Saudi Arabia after the US and EU forces want out of the power vacuum caused by the coup in 2011. In April the US cedes wartime control of the military in the Republic of Korea and dissolves the Combined Forces Command. The US and South Korea now operate as two distinct military commands in Korea during wartime, rather than one unified command under the Combined Forces Command. In July China launches the last of its Kuafa space weather forecast system in to orbit. In June Oman and Yemen both join the UAE after the UAE vows to hold democratic elections by 2020, and talks are held between the UAE and Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain about joining the UAE. In August the US bans the sale of incandescent light bulbs in favor of more efficient compact fluorescent lamps and LED lamps. President Obama (D) decides to run for a second term as president and Vice-President Biden (D) joins him on the ticket as well. The front runners in for the Republican nominee are Senator Sarah Palin of Alaska (R), former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee (R), Texas Governor Rick Perry (R), Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels (R), and Representative Roy Blunt of Missouri (R). After a tight race Texas Governor Perry (R) wins the nomination and selects Senator Palin of Alaska (R) as his VP. President Obama has an approve rating of 58% and many see the Republicans having a hard time combating against the number. The Republicans lose the Presidential election but make ground in both houses of Congress.

Barack Obama/Joe Biden (D): 386
Rick Perry/Sarah Palin (R): 154

Yeah, they just elected a Governor who is part of the Republican Party (even thought he is part of Pro-Statehood Party/New Progressive Party [it's made up of both Dems and Republicans]). Because of this note, it's hard to know which way Puerto Rico would vote.

Oh, and the Saudi Arabia thing makes no sense and is totally wrong.

A coup takes place...the leader of the coup leaves the country before the US and EU try to over through him...he has the every member of the royal family killed...the country goes into a civil war between Pro-US/EU and those against...so the UAE steps in to take over to put an end to the war...it could happen

I know. That doesn't mean they'd vote Republican. I'm sure he wasn't elected because he was a Republican. The incumbent PDP governor was in the biggest scandal ever and there is a general favour for statehood.

Killing 5,000 people is hard, you know. Secondly, the UAE has a sh**t army and a sh**t government that could never take over a country with Saudi Arabia (where a coup is unlikely to start off. The army is solidly royalist).

I assume this 'Fahd Al-Aziz' guy you randomly made up is the King? If so, that makes no sense.

WWII...Jews...do I need to say any more...
The UN allows the UAE to take over the government operations of Saudi Arabia...allowing for a Pan-Arab Country to start forming...Fahd Al-Aziz is someone I made up, he is an Arabian terrorist who leads an undercover operation to infiltrate the military of Saudi Arabia, where they are able to interfere with its operation when him and his followers make their move for the coup...just go with it, will yeah...lol

just looking at your electoral map: puerto rico is culturally and politically a solid dem state, more so than georgia is republican

pr going republican outside of a landslide year with special circumstances* would be like washington or minnesota going gop or on the other side georgia or kansas going dem

* see jedis timeline where pr goes gop due to republicans playing up social issues and republican fighting for statehood

he has a rationale for it and you dont

On top of that, the UAE has a weak central government and a sh**t army of 65,000 in all, while the Saudi army alone (excluding the RSAF and RSN) has 199,500.

It's based in the Najd, which has never been conquered from outside.

The Ottomans were limited to the Hedjaz and the Eastern Province (Al Hasa, IIRC).

Riyadh itself is a random spot in the middle of the desert and high plateaus.

Yeah I know...but Darfur isn't the one who is having the referendum in real life

The idea of having a Pan-Arab Nation with the name of the UAE (It's like the USA as far as its meaning), it's the start of a united Arabian Peninsula.

And as far as the rest of you guys go...the UAE doesn't invade Saudi Arabia...it's the start of a Arab Federation using the UAE name...please tell me that you can understand this...because more of this type of stuff is coming in the future...

Will do when I have the time...I have a lot of reading and papers that I have to do...so I'm not able to work on my time line as much as I would like.

It's like Mexico...Its official name is the United States of Mexico...but it's known as Mexico to most people...the United Arab Emirates is the official name for Arabia (the new country) in my time line...It's a young country in its new form so a name change could be possible...

But those will never come to anything because the governments will always want to maintain their own power (remember the UAR's failure) and military operations to achieve unification are guaranteed to fail.
