Actually it's not that close to the U of C. Ward 17 has parts of Englewood, West Englewood and Auburn Gresham. The ward is roughly 99% black.

Obama's old IL Senate district is stretched along the lakefront from the Loop to IN.

  Obama actually resides in Kenwood, the neighborhood just north of Hyde Park.  His residence is in Ward 4 which he handily won by a margin of  23,896 to 595.

  Incidentally in wards 6,8,9,21, and 24 McCain also failed to break the 1% threshold.  All are on the southside except 24 are on the southside.  24 is on the west side of the city straddling the Eisenhower Expressway.

  McCain's best performance 43.45% came in ward 41 which is the far northwest side of the city containing O'Hare.

Wow, these Ward 17 precinct results are beautiful. A couple have over 400 votes (one at 483), and every single one is for Barack Obama. No McCain. No third parties. 100% Obama!
