300 votes were cast for President in this county. Is this the smallest vote per county in the country? Either way, Montana was in play for Obama but he didn't seem to campaign there. Could you imagine campaigning for votes there and what the GOTV effort would be like on both sides?

The residents of Loving County, Texas, cast 67 ballots for McCain and 12 for Obama.

Five more people voted for Obama in Loving in the general (12) than the primary (7), while 67 more people voted for McCain, as no one voted in the Republican primary in Loving. Kind of odd.

Loving County, Texas is the smallest county in the US, with a population of 67. As with all of those counties with more square miles than people, it's a bunch of farmers and ranchers basically. Most of them are well within the Republican base anyway. Eastern Montana is experiencing negative growth and before too long all the counties out there will be like Petroleum. Western Montana is where all the moderates (and liberals) from the West Coast are moving and those are really the persuadables. It takes so much effort to get around the eastern half it would have been a waste basically (going door to door would burn through an entire gas tank with maybe a handful of voters convinced to vote one way or the other).

They had no local party establishment, so they didn't hold a primary.  Weird Texas thing--some bigger counties followed suit.

I think Petroleum is my favorite county name in the country, save possibly Deaf Smith.

And the 2007 Census estimate puts Loving's population at 55.  Hmm...

Ongoing family feuds cause remote relatives to register in Loving County for local races.

There was an article on it once, it was pretty hilarious.  I'll try to dig it up.
