currently republicans only hold 24 out of 200 seats (5 in the senate, 19 in the house)

from what i understand, the gop are only contesting something like 44 seats.

any chance they could pick up a few seats?

Another pertinent question is: any chance, any other party (besides Dems) picks up any seats? W/ the Republicans near-dormant in much of the state, what is it that prevents a real second party from emerging?

I do believe there are only 2 or 3 independents running for the state legislature this year.

There is a mediocre chance that Republicans could maybe pick up a state house seat, but I wouldn't bet any money on it.  The GOP incumbents are pretty entrenched, so I wouldn't expect too many casualties on that front.
