Immediately.  I'll give Obama a chance, but I just don't agree with his plans thus far and can see myself looking toward 2012 in a relatively short amount of time.

And should McCain win, I don't see him running for a 2nd term and I couldn't see Palin as the heir-apparent.

I'll probably opt to take the same path as I have with this presidential election cycle: after the 2010 midterm elections.

^^^

But with enough time to see how the midterms affect the contenders for 2012. So I said early 2011.

Most statewide elections are in 2010. And since this is a redistricting cycle, I'm even more interested in the 2010 elections than in the jockeying for 2012 before the 2010 elections have played out.

After the midterms but before the Iowa Straw Poll. So anywhere from Jan 2011 to June 2011 when Straw poll preparations are under way.

Hopefully never. Though in saying that by then I'd like to be living in the United States (or Canada) and thus things cannot be avoided.

And if we're talking about congressional rather than presidential, take one from "November 3rd, 2010" and add to whatever option's closest to "as soon as Census 2010 figures come out".

This election cycle has reminded me how much I love following US politics. I had gotten so disillusioned with the Bush presidency and especially him getting reelected in spite of being an obvious failure, that for several years I barely followed US politics. Not gonna happen again.

As soon as the previous elections are over.

In the presidential election, that would mean the day after election 2008.
In the congressional elections, that would mean the day after election 2010.
In the gubernatorial elections, that would mean the day after election 2011.
