What's amazing is that he'll have been Senator for just over 42 years. That's definitely a record for a defeated Senator.

40, actually. Stevens was first appointed, by Walter Hickel btw.

Correct. The current record holder is Warren Magnuson, who served six months plus a few weeks as his predecessor was given a judgeship.

Bye Bye Ted. The good thing is that he won't be the Senior Republican anymore. So if we ever regain the Senate he won't be President Pro Temp. He also won't be on which ever committee that he used to chair passing out the Pork. Because Pete Domenici is retiring the next in line for Stevens position as Senior Republican is Orrin Hatch.  Hatch is honest and as far as I know not addicted to pork like Steven is. I don't know who would become ranking memeber on Steven's committee. The GOP Conference as a whole will be 10 yrs fresher if Stevens loses.

Go Begich!!!!! and you know I rarely support Democrats.

Actually, Dick Lugar would be the senior-most Republican. Although both he and Hatch have served the same amount of time in the Senate, Lugar would get the distinction because his state is larger.

Of course, if Lugar gets a position in an Obama administration, Hatch becomes Mr. Seniority.

As much as I can't stand the man, I have a weird love and respect for him.  His interview with the reporter (I think FOX???) when she asked, "Why will they reelect you?"  And he said, "I don't know.  Ask them.  I just know they will" amuzed me - he makes me laugh.

Yes your right about that Lugar is 1705 and Hatch is 1708. I do think there is a good chance Lugar will either get a position in an Obama cabinet or resign before the end of his term. Either way Both Lugar and Hatch are much more honest then Ted the Felon.

Besides, Alaskans could double the number of congresscritters in history to have been born in the state by electing Begich. So far, Lisa Murkowski is the only one. Berkovitz isn't either.

And they'd both have parents who held statewide elective office.
