You hear that sound, Gordon? That's Slate Gorton knocking on your door. Like Gorton, Gordon Smith appears primed to lose reelection in a presidential election year. This ad by Obama, which could shift some Obama/Smith supporters Merkley's way, may seal Smith's fate.

The Oregon seat is one we really need.

I also think that Jeff Merkley is the most progressive of all the Democratic Senate challengers in this election, so that makes it even more important.

Ugh, I'd hate to see Gordon go.  He's an awesome senator, even though I disagree with him about the Iraq War.

He has some plausible reason to want Merkley as an ally voting on Obama-backed legislation, but wouldn't it be kind of presumptuous to go wading into all kinds of unrelated races?

Imagine though if Merkeley loses, this could totally backfire for Obama. If the Democrats don't get sixty in the Senate, Obama's gonna need moderates like Gordon Smith to vote for cloture against Republican filibusters, and I'm pretty sure Smith would be quite less likely to do any favors for Obama now.

The risk is totally worth it.

Wouldnt' really matter in my opinion.

The only Republican(s) I see possibly joining the Democrats in supporting legislation are Olympia Snowe and (maybe) Arlen Specter and Susan Collins. Gordon Smith votes with his party almost all the time.

Well, Gregoire was one of his early supporters in the Primary and she's in serious danger in a state where he is very popular. So his doing an ad for her just makes sense to me, especially when Rossi is putting up signs everywhere that compare him to Obama.

I don't think he was saying that he does or even should care. He just wants him to do it. They want to stop Dino before he...
