this year's nomination?  As many of you may know the Whig party ran three regional candidates in an attempt to knock off Van Buren by sending the election into the House of Representatives.  What if the Democrats would have adopted a similar strategy this year, placing Obama on the ballot in the various state primaries that he won, and placing Hillary Clinton name on the ballot in the various state primaries that she won.  What would the results be?  Would the Democrats have succeeded in throwing the election into the House of Representatives?  If it had been thrown into the House, how would that situation have been resolved?

It was a stupid idea then... It would be an even stupider idea now.

The 1836 Whig strategy was hilariously and comically stupid even for its' time, and if it didn't work in that era of heightened regionalism and strong identification with statehood rather than nationhood, then it wouldn't work now.

An absolute disaster. The Republicans would successfully argue: "How can you trust the Democrats when they can't even decide who to nominate?" and "The Democrats are trying to trick you!".
