Yikes.  I'm glad I'm not leading McCain's campaign right about now, even more than the last week.

locked my old thread since I guess you beat me to it.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- A legislative committee investigating Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has found she unlawfully abused her authority in firing the state's public safety commissioner.

The investigative report concludes that a family grudge wasn't the sole reason for firing Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan but says it likely was a contributing factor.

The Republican vice presidential nominee has been accused of firing a commissioner to settle a family dispute. Palin supporters have called the investigation politically motivated.

Monegan says he was dismissed as retribution for resisting pressure to fire a state trooper involved in a bitter divorce with the governor's sister. Palin says Monegan was fired as part of a legitimate budget dispute.

the above red ink was from the NYT.

Here's the report:
http://media.adn.com/smedia/2008/10/10/16/Branchflowerreport.source.prod_affiliate.7.pdf

It'll load slowly because of the 5,000 reporters loading it this second.

Difference between the NYT and CNN?  I'm trying to view the report right now.  But it's 263 pages long.

HOW WAS THE MCCAIN CAMPAIGN NOT ABLE TO WHIP A LEGISLATURE 2/3rds GOP TO KEEPING IT PRIVATE?  McCain had some top agents in the state and Obama had no obvious ones (and could not afford to be exposed as involved).

How about an unscripted Q&A press conference with the national media instead?

The Alaskan Republicans hate Palin because she basically called them a bunch of thugs in order to get elected. Presumably that has something to do with it.

He meant abuses of power by elected officials, which is worse than what you're referring to

An individual in an appointed position serves at the discretion of the Governor. Andrew Johnson and Grant did the same sorts of things.

However, you're not allowed to use your authority to serve personal interests.  Otherwise this wouldn't be an "abuse of power."

This trooper deserved to be fired, plain and simple.

Yes, but it's not her job to fire the guy who wouldn't fire him over it and it's an especial abuse of power considering her personal and emotional connection to the trooper.  Investing 19 phone calls to the commissioner over one trooper is ridiculous and not what Palin should have been doing, given her former relationship with the trooper involved.

George Bush's hedges might need trimming, but it'd be an abuse of power for him to pressure a U.S. soldier to do so.

More fun stuff from TPMMuckraker (D):
The report reveals that four days after Sarah Palin was elected governor in November 2006, Todd Palin called John Glass, who was then the chief of the Wasilla Police Department and shortly afterwards became a deputy public safety commissioner for the state, working under Walt Monegan.

There were two vacant spots on the Wasilla PD at the time. Todd Palin told Glass that he did not want Wooten hired as a Wasilla officer, and that he should be fired as a state trooper.

Wooten was not hired by Glass.

Did his boss deserve to be fired as well?

10 Republicans and 4 Democrats ran this investigation. Palin abused her powers for personal gain, plain and simple.
