Hurts a little unless Kerry immediately comes out and says that Bush should be proud of his service in the national guard.  If Kerry does that then it helps him a little.

It hurts a lot. The reason for the campaign is for Kerry to get people to vote for him. What has he been able to do in the past month to get closer to that point? Nothing. It's been Swiftboat vets, and Athens, and Madison Square Garden and Chechnya and forged documents and other stories.  Kerry might as well have gone to Bermuda for the month. It would have helped him just as much. He's been shouted down. Now, he's just flailing and people can smell desperation.

It'll hurt Kerry about as much as the swift boat nonsense hurt Bush.   I have my doubts about the memos.  I have little doubt that Bush had some strings pulled and got preferential treatment to get into the 'safe' guard unit. (which was using planes which were being phased out.).

In either case, I consider it to be a 'flavor of the week' issue which partisans on both sides will rant about as it fades to be replaced with the next big hype (whatever that turns out to be).

I don't think it helps or hurts Kerry except for being yet another distraction from the real issues.

Well, if Drudge is to be believed, the DNC is planning an national blitz against Bush's National Guard records.  I think this will be seen as an act of desperation, and will only hurt Kerry's chances of being elected.

Already back-firing against the Democrats even before their ads hit the airways:

Operation "Fortunate Son" is based on an old brochure when Bush ran for Congress years ago saying Bush served in the Air Force.  Turns out.... he did.

"I will enter on active duty for training for 120 days or until I have satisfactorily completed the training courses I have elected."

So the Republicans are allowed to lie for weeks about Kerry's record, but it's bad if the Democrats point out that Bush did not get the points he was supposed to in the National Guard?

Actually, he met the minimum required points each year of his service.

When Republican-financed Swift Boat Veterans for Truth attack Kerry, Kerry suffers. Their stories are far from infallible and most of them don't know John Kerry from Adam.

When CBS question Bush's National Guard service,  the Democrats get the flack! Yes, that's double standards alright.

The DNC should not be running with this story. It's negative campaiging and it can alienate voters. My advice to them is to get back to the issues. Should the Republican's play dirty with Kerry, then rise above it! Bush's National Guard service has been done to death in the past.

There is more scope to criticise the presidency of George W Bush than there is to praise it. He's vulnerable on most issues - but you wouldn't bloody think it by the tone of this campaign.
